Oh my gawd ... It works! LINUX WORKS! |
|
After carefully wracking my atrophied brain and making a boot CD of Ubuntu 5.04 -- "Linux for Humans" -- and changing the boot routine of my computer via the mysterious and terrifying BIOS -- I shut down and re-started my computer and bit my nails down to the cuticles during the heart-stopping 9-minute boot sequence of the Ubuntu live system, and then ...
Linux!
I have not had this much excitement since the first time I got positive reviews for a political rant on Usenet (during the waning days of the Reagan administration).
Already I hate the fonts. But I suppose I can change that, right?
In conclusion, I would like to thank my agent, my publicist, Mr. Spielberg, Mr. Eisner, all of the Little People, and especially the Linux users here at DU. With the warning that I will probably have hundreds more questions (though I found the "man(ual)" pages early on, or I would have said "thousands").
Thanks again, everybody. I think I'm going keep my unemployed programmer's ass in this chair for the rest of the day and look around the system.

3. But you don't know my history with Linux |
|
Two -- or was it three? -- major attempts to get it going, in 1995, 1999, and 2002 (which doesn't really count since the Red Hat disc wasn't even readable and I gave up in disgust).
But I've been playing with it for a little while now and it's already impressive, even the Gnu desktop, which is supposed to be the inferior of the two (the other one being KDE). So I also downloaded Kubuntu to try that one out.
It should have been a "Duh" process ten years ago when I first tried it out, but better late than never.
Back to the new playground ... :)

It's worked for me ever since.

2. I have Fedora Core 3.0, and its pretty good |
|
(ok, it lacks NTFS file support, but that's just a small download away) I've always had RH distros (7.0, 8.0, 9.0 and now FC), perhaps I should try something different. Best of luck with Ubuntu and enjoy yourself!

I think this link was posted in another thread. In case you didn't see it, this should be your next stop: http://www.ubuntuguide.org/

7. Been there, seen that ;) |
|
I started the other thread, too, but it fell pretty far down, and I wanted everyone who gave me direction and advice to see that I finally got Linux working. I've had at least three major failures in getting Linux to work (Yggdrasil in '95, Slackware circa '97 or '98, and Red Hat in '02).
In the past three days, I've been to a lot of other sites and downloaded a ton of info -- enough to destroy my printer. :)
Ubuntu (and Kubuntu, the KDE based Ubuntu) is Debian, and there are at least three guides from Debian users on how to compile your own distro, which I may try to do as a "learning experience". Actually hacking through a project is the best way I learn.
