Asking for advice on internet providers... |
|
Hi~
I hope nobody minds me asking for this advice but I thought "Where else to get good advice but DU?" So here's the thing (any advice will be greatly appreciated...in advance)... My sister just moved to Ohio to go to graduate school. It's her first time on her own and, I hate to say this, but some company is bound to get way more money out of her than they should. So, she signed up for phone service yesterday with Verizon (that's a story in its own right) and the woman told her about a great internet deal (DSL) that they have which would be $19.95 for the first three months. I asked my sis if it stayed at that rate or went up and she said she thought it went to $29.95 for each block of three months. Still, not too bad of a deal. Lo and behold, I was at imdb.com and there was an ad for Verizon DSL. I checked it out and the $29.95 is per month for each month of the required rest of the year contract. Bad deal. Sis said that maybe the woman she talked to was confused, I said it was much more likely she was trying to sell her something. Anyway, this story is getting way too long. I promised my sister that I'd check around for better internet deals.
Does any kind soul here have a suggestion of a good internet provider, how to find one, or general suggestions (on a graduate school budget)?
Thanks so much either way!!!!

well that isn't a horrible price for DSL. If it was dial up--she would be overcharged--that runs between $10 and 25 (for aol).
Cable companies (which have a bit faster service for internet) are charging $39 to $49 per month.
My SBC in California runs 24.95 a month--would have been $19.95 if I signed up for a bunch of frivolous features that would run an extra $25 a month.
It is also possible that verizon has an offer that is $19 per month first 3 months then $29 after which you can't get on the internet.
