8. I'm so sorry you have to work! Just kidding, I hope the pay is obscene |
|
and the hours are minimal. Enjoy.
Hmmm, 4 years and 3 months so that's right around March of 2001. What was happening at that time that would scare the job market off for so long? Just can't think of anything...

15. At the time I was laid off I had no idea the economy was tanking |
|
I thought it was just the company I was working for. I had no idea that it would take me 16 months to find work in my field. I worked in a convenience store for part of that time. There was talk of extending unemployment benefits that year since it was so hard to find another job, but by the time they finally did it (March 11, 2002) I only got 3 weeks out of it. Bush liked to pretend that the economy tanked on September 11, but it was well before that.
The salary won't be as good as the job I lost in 2001 but it will be better than the contract work I've been doing, and its a growing company so it should be secure.

I've actually had several interviews during the last few months that could have led to a permanent job. That's better than at any of the other times I've been between assignments. It took me two months to find this, but I had more interviews than I usually do.

10. Thank you all- I am in shock |
|
I am a mid level computer tech. I was laid off from a really good computer job March 2001. After that I was unemployed for 16 months, the worst time of my life. Then I got a contract assignment, but no benefits. Changed after 16 months of that to another contract assigment with health insurance. Laid off last August, got something in October, laid off in November, got something in January, laid off in April.
I have 3 weeks of unemployment compensation left this time and I am so broke. I need this job so badly.
I had the first interview last week and the lady thought I was overqualified and asked me why I would want this job- I said, because I haven't had a permanent job in four years and if I get this job I am going to be so happy you will hear me screaming all the way to New York.
I just had a phone interview with her boss and I was really nervous but he hired me.
I'm gonna go scream and cry!

Great news for you, even if you are overqualified.
My fiancee has been unemployed (practically speaking) since August of 2001, so I can imagine how you feel.
She's a computer programmer with 10 years experience...but after being fired from her last 2 jobs (for completely bogus reasons) she's really had nothing substantial since.
Right now, she's working as a colorist for an online web comic...she's great at it, but it doesn't pay much of anything.(as in...$30 a month)

17. There's a lot of programmer jobs listed here in Madison |
|
for Java and .net developers. I don't have those skills but I always think I'd do better if I did, maybe not.
I filled out the application for this job and I gave three references and my three most recent employers. As far as I know, they didn't call any of them. And that's not the first time that's happened to me.
Good luck to your fiancee.

unfortunately, her skills are mostly in COBOL...
She also knows C and SQL and UNIX...but she also doesn't much like programming (except for the money)

13. Its tech support for an office of about 70 people |
|
The headquarters is in the Financial District in NY, this is a satellite office in Madison, WI. They've been trying to support it from NY and it thats getting to be too much, so they've hired me to be onsite. I will also support their remote users. Its not too hard, not to easy- I have no doubts about this at all, just can't believe this long hard era in my life is finally going to end.
Hypnotoad, you gotta be next!
