1. I'm elated for his family
but you do have to wonder how many families are suffering in silence with no help from the media.

6. How can you be so cruel?
Edited on Tue Jun-21-05 02:51 PM by PinkTiger
I refuse to believe that he is less worthy than others to be found, just because he is white and "cute."

I grieve for all lost children. But you have to understand the way the media works. In Utah, this is a big story. In a big city, it would not be such a story because of the number of people living there and the way the police and the media work.

It is less a situation caused by race and more of a situation decided by place. The one in Aruba is interesting because you would think a high school student on a trip with parent chaperones would be safe.
Fat chance.
I know from taking students places that you have to have rigid rules. What was she doing, taking off with strangers anyway?
That girl should have been briefed about the dangers and parents should have been watching.

17. Riiiiiiiiiiight.
Of course, this child should have been found and, obviously, his family was distressed. However, there is a pattern of abuse in the country in which children of color are ignored.

It does not mean that this boy did not deserve attention. It means that there are others who should be as fortunate.

18. No one is unhappy that this story has a happy ending.
This might be a big story in Utah, but it's getting NATIONAL coverage.
There is a difference.

This story, and the one in Aruba are getting coverage for two reasons:

1. White, attractive victims.
2. Families with the ability to mobilize and get media attention.

Hundreds of people go missing every single day. Many don't get any attention at all. Very few get national coverage.

22. I just did a check of missing children in Utah,
and I was right.
Brennan was one of two missing in Utah that were not runaways or family abductions. The other one is Garrett Alexander Bardsley, who was lost in the same area last August and never found.

Most missing children are runaways or family abductions.
I'm sorry that your supposition about color and race are wrong but they are.

I am saddened for the family of everyone who is reported lost or missing.

I am elated for everyone who is eventually found :bounce:

I am pissed off at the media for nationalizing essentially local stories in their lazy quest for sensationalism.

27. Why blame the media?
We obviously want to know this information, or it wouldn't be put out there.

Here's some stats about missing kids:

"The problem of missing children is complex and multifaceted. There are different types of missing children including family abductions; endangered runaways; nonfamily abductions; and lost, injured, or otherwise missing children. The best national estimates for the number of missing children are from incidence studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

To date two such studies have been completed. The first National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART-1) was released in 1990, and the second, known as NISMART-2, was released in October 2002. According to NISMART-2 research, which studied the year 1999, an estimated 797,500 children were reported missing; 58,200 children were abducted by nonfamily members; 115 children were the victims of the most serious, long-term nonfamily abductions called "stereotypical kidnappings"; and 203,900 children were the victims of family abductions."

29. The national media over-reports some cases
Edited on Tue Jun-21-05 03:33 PM by Lavender Brown
Obviously, local coverage helps find kids sometimes, together with the Amber Alerts. But you can't possibly believe that the girl in Aruba is leading all the news coverage because people want to know about it that much. It is overkill to the point that it is overshadowing everything else in the news.

30. I agree on the Aruba girl.
It is indeed sad, but I am so angry that no one has looked at the obvious: what was she doing, hanging out in a bar and leaving with three strangers? Who was supposed to be watching this child?
It seems the media dropped the ball on this one.

32. What I meant is, they didn't address the real issue here,
Which is oversight of teens by adults.
There is absolutely no excuse for that child being allowed to be alone in a bar and to leave with the young men she left with, except that parents or sponsors didn't do their job.
I think this is what the media should be highlighting.

46. Well, then you must be about 18.
The reports stated the students were there on a senior trip post graduation; parents and teachers were sponsors. I find it rather ludicrous that on a senior trip these students were hanging out at bars and taking off with strangers.

I stand by my comments. I take COLLEGE students on trips abroad; none of them would dare do what this girl did. I'd tan their hides.

I prepare my people ahead of time. They are allowed to have fun, but one rule is, they never leave with strangers and they don't allow someone to leave with a stranger. Also, they never leave anyone behind. They go in groups and they come back in groups, and never past 1 a.m. without checking in and letting me know they are around the corner at O'Brien's pub.

45. No.
From the Crime Library:

http://www.crimelibrary.com/missing_children/aaliyah_johnson.html

Aaliyah Johnson, 12, missing since May 15th 2005.

http://www.crimelibrary.com/missing_children/latoya_byrd.html

Latoya Byrd, 15, missing since March 27th 2005.

http://www.crimelibrary.com/missing_children/alex_buckman.html

Alex Buckman, 18, missing since March 24th 2005 (he was a minor when he went missing)

http://www.crimelibrary.com/missing_children/rosa_perez.html

Rosa Perez, 16, missing since March 8th, 2005

And there are several other white children whose abductions have went unnoticed. More than half on that list are minorities (Blacks and hispanics)

I think that media coverage is good but I think it should also only be local media and not 24/7 on national media, just a brief mention.

I remember when I went to Oxford in the summer of 2002, tabloids covered the Holly and Jessica disappearance every single day (the Daily Mirror and the Sun for example), but the Times really only gave a blip to them and really focused on important world issues such as politics.

That's what I now think of CNN, et al. Tabloid news.
