Holmes Won't Be Invited Back for Batman Sequel
Posted by Scott Weinberg on Tuesday, Jun. 21, 2005, 12:40 AM

jrwells writes: "According to the New York Post, it has been reported that Katie Holmes will not be cast in the sequel to this weekend's number one movie, "Batman Begins." An unnamed source told the entertainment column at TVGuide.com that " next romantic interest will be a much stronger actress."

The IMDb newspage confirms the info and takes it a step further: "Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman have signed to star in a second Batman movie, but love interest Katie Holmes has been dropped. Movie bosses are thrilled with the response to Batman Begins ... and have snapped up the film's stars for a sequel ... But Holmes won't reprise her role as district attorney Rachel Dawes -- reportedly because Warner Bros is angry her engagement to Tom Cruise has stolen media attention away from the movie.""

ON EDIT: The IMDB post:

Holmes Dropped from 'Batman' Sequel
Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman have signed to star in a second Batman movie, but love interest Katie Holmes has been dropped. Movie bosses are thrilled with the response to Batman Begins - it took $46.9 million in its first weekend at the US box office - and have snapped up the film's stars for a sequel. Bale as Batman was the first to put pen to paper, followed by Caine as butler Alfred and Freeman as Bruce Wayne's business associate Lucius Fox. But Holmes won't reprise her role as district attorney Rachel Dawes - reportedly because Warner Bros is angry her engagement to Tom Cruise has stolen media attention away from the movie. A source tells Pagesix.Com, "Everyone is in agreement that the movie's strength is with Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman." Adding of Holmes, "She won't be in the sequel... the next romantic interest will be a much stronger actress. Warner is happy that people are now focusing on who'll be playing the Joker rather than Katie and Tom."

2. Tom doesn't like his ladies to out act him
He really shouldn't worry about her doing that.

3. Katie needs to stick to playing sulking teenagers
It's the only role she's really convincing at.

6. True. I don't think the world is ready for "Katie Homes: D.A."...
And maybe, just maybe, after the glow wears off of the Tom 'n' Katie romance, they will both S.T.F.U. and the studios will start calling her again.

Right now, she's carrying a lot of baggage. That baggage is called "Tom," and I don't think the Dawson's Creek crowd wants the mental image of her auditing body thetans at the L.A. Celebrity Center. It just doesn't smack of "girl next door"...not to say that's who she IS in "real" life, of course.

5. I thought she did a good job in 'Batman Begins'....
for what she was given to do. At least, her character wasn't as completely useless as was Vicki Vale's in the Michael Keaton original.

But I'm glad she's gone. In this next movie, Batman needs to concentrate on what he does best: kicking a$$ and taking names. That's not a "romantic" enterprise.

7. She won't be missed
Her character just really wasn't that important to the story at all.

8. The only reviews I've read damned her with faint praise.
Everyone else was great, and she was adequate. I think they need another Kim Bassinger, or Michelle Pfeiffer.

10. when has one woman appeared in two batman movies?
while we're at it, it's not like the men who portray batman stays around all that long too.

And while we're on the subject of batman...how many @$*&%$! batman movies do we need anyway????

But back to Katie...she's marrying Tom Cruise now which, according to his track record, her career will stall and then when he breaks up with her when she turns 34, she'll win an oscar or something.

now I'm just tired and babbling about people I never really cared about. lol

16. This latest Batman movie is a reboot of the entire genre
I urge you to see it, even if you aren't so inclined. There are a lot of liberal/progressive issues advanced in this film, and it really is just a darn good movie, regardless of its "super hero" trappings. Forget all of the Burton/Schumacher abortions that have come before; this one reigns supreme.

17. really??
honestly, I had no idea. When I heard there was going to be another batman movie, I sort of closed my eyes and ears at that point. I just assumed it was more of the same.

I'll check out the trailer. Super hero trappings never really bothered me but I get bored when it's the same movie made over again with just different characters.

20. Really. You have not seen a "super hero" movie like this.
This film really explores the motivations and methods of a dude who would dress up in a bat costume to fight crime. You will leave the theater really believing that a guy with an enormous amount of cash at his disposal, whose family was killed by a common street thug, would go to the lengths that he does to fight crime. This film succeeds on almost every level. The cinematography alone is worth the trip.

This is not your usual "comic book" movie. Save a few bucks; go to to the matinee. But you will want to see it again.

11. Save for Selina Kyle, Batman shouldn't have a "next romantic interest"
The next film should center on Wayne and Gordon's pursuit of (a very psychotic) Joker--without a digression in which the hero reaches for his Bat-condom. The guy's a loner.

13. I think Talia trumps Catwoman as Batman's greatest love interest.
I mean... they had a kid together after all.

22. True, but the resolution to Batman Begins made that an impossibility
O'Neil's story was wonderful, though.

15. It worked for Nicole.
Maybe she's hoping that she'll rise to the A-list, after Cruise dumps her.

the rest of the cast was great, and she didn't stand out in this movie. :(
