2. I think you would have to combined 2 crappy movies to get the Matrix not
a crappy movie and one of the greatest movies of all time.

The Matrix is like the most pretentious movie of all time combined with the Fast and the Furious. Eye candy for idiots + bad actors + MTV slick editing/music with a wannabe David Lynch-ish David Croenenberish "depth" that actually doesn't exist but it's annoying fans attempt to prove does to no avail.

5. I am talking of the idea behind Matrix
Which I think when you combine the idea behind THX and the Star Wars saga comes close to where Matrix came from.

I knew a guy who tried to argue that the Matrix existed. He wasn't too bright, though, so it just came across that he was sort of kooky.

I should have tried to argue that the "Force" exists...not to the extent of Star Wars, but if you got really deep into physics, there may be some semblance there...more than a "Matrix" anyway.

6. Yeah and I'm saying people who get that obsessed with such an overated
crapfest like the Matrix have no credibility when it comes to movies or life.

8. I like Matrix but Reloaded was not as good
and Matrix Revolutions blew as much as Phantom Menace.

Talk about taking a franchise down the tubes very quickly! Wow!

16. I thought it was pretty cool
The 2nd one and 3rd weren't as good as the first, but they were pretty neat. Not to say I take the philosophy in it as fact, though.

10. Colossus is an underrated gem of a movie
Many times in these forums I have extolled the virtues of this amazing, frightening film.

I just watched it again a couple of weeks ago. It is just as chilling (and plausible) now as it was 30-some years ago.

17. my sense is that 'dune' influenced lucas greatly...
with it's sweep of mythological import (not lynch's film per se although i like it for other reasons), but that 'the matrix' was an anomaly  still, there's little doubt that i can be wrong

19. One of my friends claims Lucas ripped the whole Star Wars
story from Dune. I tried to read Dune when I was in high school but found it to be boring. Perhaps I should try again.

20. Actually Star Wars was influenced by Ford and Kurosawa
Edited on Tue Jun-21-05 07:57 PM by Lannes
By Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress" and Ford's "The Searchers"

21. reasonable enough to conclude...
considering lucas to be a filmmaker; there're little pieces of certain other directors as well, yet are we speaking film-screenplay-cinematography, or story treatment here  a little fritz lang sprinkled about as well

Kurosawa influenced many; himself influenced by occidental story lines on occasion

that's fine. you want your little pat on the head? you got it. you need to seriously consider getting your dumbass over to gd where people like to argue for virtually no reason at all much like your silly little exchanges here.

you don't want to have an adult conversation about these matters so go ahead & admit it.

paper or no paper, you simply have no fucking idea what i know, or do not know. and with a mind designed like 'a one trick pony' you are not able to avail yourself of discovery how sad. here...get happy:

Show me where I praised Lucas for anything.I just pointed out his influences which you obviously didnt know because if you did you wouldnt have listed his primary influence as "Dune".

If you are the best that UCLA is producing I suggest you get your money back.

22. I sense a lot of mythical references in Star Wars
Including Lord of the Rings. It seems to be a cornucopia of myths.

28. this is part of my point...
herbert, tolkien, asimov; these guys were dealing in myths, and myths are where the power is. lucas understands that with a quickness as should we all.

thx was important in terms of film development; not particularly groundbreaking but fresh for it's time & place, innovative with 'cinematic eye', yet offered no myth per se. next was to come 'star wars' packed to the rafters with myth & neo-intergalactic spaghetti western & voila!

a 30yr excursion laced with t-shirts, lunch boxes & action figures

is a great film, about 10,000 times better than the average Star Wars crapfest. I, uh, don't quite see any relationship between it and the Matrix, other than people living hypnotized lifestyles. Maybe "Tron" and THX?? :D

36. Well, elements of each could combine to come up with
elements of the Matrix. With THX, it was the dehumanization of the system, with Star Wars, the Chosen One(vs the One in the Matrix).
I suppose a lot of movies have common elements, though.

I just felt like bringing these up!!
