Over The Top: If you need some toilet paper. . . like RIGHT AWAY. . . you don't have time to be rolling it and then grabbing it from the underside and tearing it. You need to be able to drop your hand on the roll, give it one hard tug, and come away with some pliable two-ply.

Front To Back: There is never any reason to purposefully wipe poo towards your genitals. Exceptions to this rule include:

a) You just can't get the angle the other way.
b) You have a fetish I don't want to know about.

practical reasons for both ways. If you want easy access or show the print, over is the way to go. If you have kids and/or pets and want to slow the rate of consumption or hide the end, put it against the wall.
