Now That The House Has Banned Flag Burning, HOW DO I DISPOSE OF IT?
the ONLY way to PROPERLY dispose of a flag, is to BURN IT!

what do i do with it now?

are they going to set up central flag disposal sites for me to take it? will they CHARGE me $25 so THEY (whoever THEY are) can burn it FOR ME in APPROVED flag-burning facilities?

i'm so confused.

to encourage us not to litter. You can put it in that. But then we still haven't solved the problem, have we?

6. Did I miss something? They can't ban flag burning.
The Supreme Court said it was protected in Texas vs. Johnson (1989).

16. What pretentious asswipes!
I need to see how the dems are voting on this. I still don't see how they could make this law if the SC has said it is protected.

22. The Supreme Court doesn't have jurisdiction over Congress
If Congress passes a new law that specifically bans flag-burning, then all the SC can do is interpret the law.

The judicial branch interprets laws. Congress makes them. Shrubby (arghhhhh!) enforces them.

24. Thanks for the explanation.
However, isn't this sort of strange? I mean, really, there will certainly be a person that challenges this. Then the ACLU or some other organization, if not the actual person, will take this through the courts and ultimately it will probably reach the SC where they will have to reverse themselves. Wait! I see what is going on. The repukes, knowing that the SC is more conservative now or will be more conservative if Shrubby appoints some new ones, will try to have them overrule themselves and get this banned for good. I think I see the motive now as I write this out.

37. That's why it's an amendment instead of a regular law
If it's an amendment, it becomes part of the Constitution. When it's part of the Constitution, the courts can no longer declare it unconstitutional.

9. I sincerely recommend that
we take all old flags and mail them to DeLay's office with a request that be disposed of properly and respectfully without incineration.

You don't want to send them to every member of Congress -- let's deluge a single member.

right down to the dot on the i's and the cross on the t. Does it mean you can't wrap yourself in it anymore? By the way, what constitutes NON-physical desecration--flying the flag after dark?

13. If your Congressman voted for it, just send it to him
Maybe he has an idea.

And if our congresscritters have so much time on their hands that they have nothing better to do than come up with crap like this, then your congressman has time to think of a better way to dispose of a weather beaten flag.

31. WTF does the (proposed) amendment even mean?
"The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."

Do they have to go into session for every incident? Are they now a judicial branch? I'm confused...

And a serious responsse to matcom: Boy Scouts and VFWs take old flags for proper burials.

33. Oh gawd...here's how you get rid of it, Matcom...
Flag DESECRATION is what they're trying to get rid of. Desecration, in this case, is destroying the flag without the proper reverence for it. You know, that act that only happens once or twice a year in the United States. Not even the most serious war protestor desecrates the flag. There's no point in it. We're much more likely to make effigies of Dictator Bush and set THOSE on fire.

Things like burning it as a protest, wiping your ass with it (no more American Flag toilet paper, damn it!), walking on it or the like.

Burning a flag at the end of its life is called Retirement, and here's how you do it:

Step 1: Get some Boy Scouts or another patriotic group together. Hoist a flag to stand watch over the event and start a fire.
Step 2: Lay the flag being retired out on a table and cut the field--the blue part--away from the stripes. At this point, it's no longer a flag.
Step 3: If you have at least 14 scouts handy, cut the stripes apart.
Optional Step 3a: If you have more than one flag to retire, keep the cut-up flags separated from each other. You need to retire all the parts of one flag before you start retiring another.
Step 4: Say the Pledge of Allegiance, sing "America the Beautiful," do other patriotic things.
Step 5: If you know the flag's history, recite it: "This flag flew over Matcom's house every Independence Day for the past 29 years. It was a well-loved flag, made in the era when flags were made to last."
Step 6: Start having scouts present the pieces of the former flag to the cleansing flame. Allow the flame to consume the piece completely before presenting the next one. Present the field last.
Optional Step 3b: If you have a LOT of scouts and not very many flags to retire, cut the stars out of the field.
Step 7: After all the flags are retired and the fire has been extinguished, sing the National Anthem.
Step 8: If you're gonna hold a weenie roast after the flag retirement ceremony, decorum requires that you build a new fire in another firepit. It's just a trifle tacky to cook over a flag-fueled campfire.
