Evidently, there are still some rabid Klansmen in Mississippi. |
|
Day before yesterday, when I was at the Killen trial, the Neshoba County SWAT team unloaded from a van and marched in formation to various spots around the town square.
Get this. It was shift change. Law enforcement officials were expecting the Klan to riot after the verdict. From what I heard, there were even sharpshooters deployed on rooftops around town. :scared:
Tomorrow is Killen's sentencing day. Again, security will be really tight because, again, Klansmen will be there. (They have been there since the trial began, but they aren't so easily to identify, because, like my kiddo said, they don't have their dunce hats on.)
Everyone knows that, no matter how Killen is sentenced, it will be a "life imprisonment" sentence for him, because he's 80 years old. It's going to be an exciting day on the town square tomorrow. I'm debating just going on home tomorrow morning, because I don't want to put myself in danger.
Let me say, though, that the Klan in Mississippi is TINY now. One "Klavern" of the Klan marched in my hometown several years ago--and there were maybe four men, and four women (and a couple of children :scared: ) But there's a more organized group of "white nationalists" led by Richard Barrett, who's been at the courthouse every day during the trial. Those are the ones who concern me.

1. The Southern Poverty Law Center has done so much to dismantle... |
|
..and drive underground the white supremacist movement.
IMHO, Morris Dees is truly an American hero.

16. My dad's uncle was in the Klan - upstate Pennsylvania |
|
was a hotbed of Klan activity during the depression. Mines were closed, no jobs.
What was "funny" (if you can call it that) is that there weren't any black folks around, and most of the members were Catholics, who would have been run out of Klan groups further South.
But poverty + ignorance + hopelessness + religious insanity = trouble

21. I'm from East Central Illinois |

A hillbilly-type who sat in front of me in my high-school civics (of all places) invited me to a Klan rally once. (This was in 1993.)
I politely declined. And thanked my lucky stars when I went back to my honors classes next period.
I'm still not sure why he thought that I would be interested in attending a Klan meeting with him.

12. That was Richard Barrett's "White Nationalist" organization. |
|
They were going to have a booth set up, and Killen was going to be there.
Ironically, some Kluckers are blaming Barrett for Killen being convicted--saying that the stink about the Killen booth at the state fair is what resulted in Killen's conviction.
Idiots, all.
BTW, if you've never visited Barrett's website, you must. www.nationalist.org.
Barrett is so crazy that even die-hard segragationists in the 1960s disavowed him. Yet, at the trial, guess who the one Mississippian was that the media interviewed. No wonder people all over the USA think that we're rubes here.

19. Just like in almost every other state, the incumbent wins reelection. |
|
Word is, though, that Mike Moore may run for Lott's seat in the next election, and Moore will squash him.

The old White Citizen's Councils have become the Council of Conservative Citizens, and southern politicians like Trent Lott and Bob Barr give speeches for them.
Same old views, just different name.
