%^&$#@! I just lost a major client.
They even gave me the whole "it's not you, it's me" speech.

Second major client to hit the road so far this year. Both were out of my control entirely.

At this rate, I'll be posting on DU full-time before I know it.

7. No, but if I don't come up with a new (major) account soon,
I'll be spending much more time in the Lounge than I would prefer.

3. They actually said "It's not you, it's me"?
What did they think they were doing? Breaking up?

Sorry to hear about this, Scout. Have a drink on me!

6. Actually, they sent me an email this morning to see if I would be
available for a call this afternoon. It was at that moment that I knew we were thru. When they called I jokingly said "I was worried when I got your email because it was kind of reminiscent of "we need to talk" type break-up language." We all had a good laugh and they proceeded to tell me that our partnership was kaput. It was a directive from the top of the company (a large, large company) and that they wouldn't be renewing any deals like mine across the country.

They started telling me that they loved our partnership and the regional people were very upset with the corporate decision and I said "Oh no! Now you are giving me the "it's not you, it's me speech"!" How horrible!

Anyway, just sucks because I didn't do anything wrong to lose the business. It's a nationwide decision. Did I mention how freakin' big this account was for me?

Mmmmm....beer tastes good.

17. Thank you sir.
I'm not scared of the future. I've been with this company for going on 6 years and I'm not able to rebound and they show me the door, then so be it. I'll just take as a sign that it's time to start a new chapter. Something that has been brewing in me anyway.

9. I'm an Account Executive.

With a media company.

And I fear such a job title could get me attacked on this board on some days!

12. I'm sure I can help
Helping of course carries no guarantee of success. I'll be really nice to everyone though and ask 7 figure accounts if they'd like some coffee or tea before asking for the large amounts of money

And lots of it!

But your enthusiasm has been duly noted.

18. Thanks! The next few months will be very interesting.
My gut instinct says that this chapter in my life is coming to a close. Being shown the door might be just what the doctor ordered.

I've only been "laid off" (or down-sized by one) once before. When I left I felt like I wanted to do something completely different. And I did. That spawned a different career that I have been in for more than 10 years now.

I'm having those same feelings I did back in the day. I believe that a new chapter is about to be written. Now if only I could figure out what I want to be when I grow up....

13. I am so sorry to hear this awful news...
I wish there were something I could do to help, besides give you a virtual hug...

Please don't worry about your job title being a source of contention here in the Lounge; it isn't for me, and it shouldn't be for anyone else, either.

I really hope that you will soon have an account to replace the one you just lost...NGU!

15. Thanks Peggy.
I've been in sales long enough to know that sometimes these things just happen and are out of your control. Unfortunately, they tend to be cyclical. Seems that one out of every 4 or 5 years is kind of down.

The last time things were this slow for me from a sales standpoint was just before 9/11.

This is actually the 2nd large client to jump ship in the last 2 months. I hope it isn't a sign of things to come.

19. Just a question.....
....is this a signpost of any kind as to a general pulling back of certain resources by companies in the market segment that you deal with in regards to the immediate future of the economy? This speech sounds familiar to one that I heard not too long ago; different direction, needing new perspective, etc. I was just wondering if you had noticed previous trends or downturns that pre-indicated a business slowdown (like you mentioned pre 9/11).
There are certain economic indicators that I track in relation to my own business concern, some of which are somewhat obscure, but I would like your take on your predicament.

21. Yes, I'm seeing other subtle indicators just like I did in the spring
and summer of 2001. Our economy was showing signs of being damaged goods long before those towers fell. 9/11 then exasperated the already slowing economy.

I wouldn't say it's quite as bad yet as 2001, but my gut instinct says that things are slowing down much faster than a lot of people want to admit.

I'm no expert on the subject of the economy. I'm just relating my personal sales experience. And right now, my sales instinct says that we could be on the brink of a new economic slowdown/depression period.
