13. now I am confused, are you 24 or
63?
And will I still need you, will I still feed you, when you're 64?
My little brother is 40 today.
I figure that forty is fatal. So next year I will be celebrating the 4th anniversary of my death. I am 39 forever.

14. Well, today I celebrated the 22nd anniversary
... of my 40th birthday. In other words, it's been my 32nd birthday (base 20).

19. you cannot have a base 20
unless you invent another ten symbols. You could use the first 20 letters of the alphabet A-T, in which case you would be CB years old. 10-4 on that, good buddy.
Is that a magic number? Can you now collect social security? If so, will you?

20. 'CB' (base 20) would be 251 (base 10)
Trust me. :hi: I'm not in my third century, yet. :silly: When I got my BS in Math, we had slide rules and mainframe computers, but not handheld calculators. Thus, I had lots of practice with base-conversions by hand, even doing my graduate work in computer science.

Dunno yet about starting SS next month. Lots to think about.

Remember, '32' (hexadecimal) is 50 (base10).

22. okay, I blew that, except that T must equal zero
and if A is 1, B is 2, C is 3. CB should be the same as your 32.
So S equals 19. AT equals 20, and AA = 21. BT equals 40, and CT equals 60, CA is 61 and CB equals 62. So what am I doing wrong? How did you get 251? And CB should be 50 in hexadecimal with numbers going A-P. I just do not know what you are using for extra numerals if your base is greater than 10?
Or were you figuring that A=10, B=11, and C=12? Aha, that is where 251 (12*20 + 11) comes from, but I was planning to discard numerals and replace them with letters, and A=1 and so on.

24. By convention, alpha characters are appended to the numerical digits.
... to extend the base digit set. That's part of why the ASCII sort sequence is numerals before letters. The sequence of hexadecimal digits is '0123456789ABCDEF' where 'A'=10, 'B'=11, 'C'=12, etc.

With many years of IBM mainframe systems internals experience, I've had to read (and do arithmetic in) hexadecimal (base-16) until it was almost as automatic as base-10. (We used to call core dumps "hexadecimal reports.") In the early minicomputer world, I had to deal with octal (base-8) quite often as well. Octal has become somewhat passe in general purpose computing.

So, 3220 = (3 x 20) + 2 = 62.

26. we youngsters never follow those stodgy old conventions
I prefer my way. A must equal 1. Otherwise you end up with some sort of half number, half letter hodgepodge. And just for revenge, Portnoy is likely to say "mind your own business Mr. Spock, I am sick of your half-breed interference."

Anyway, for SS, my advice may be as mathematically incorrect as my non-traditional base math. I figure 36 months of the lower payment and divide that by the difference in the two amounts and found that I need to live to 80 to make waiting pay off. Your actual mileage may vary. Given the uncertainties of long life and these days, of government solvency, I would say that the wise money is on "pay me now".

This free advice and a glass of orange juice will provide you with a full day's supply of Vitamin C.

15. "George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are having lunch at a restaurant ...
... near the Capitol. Dick orders the Heart Healthy Salad.

"George W. leans over to the waitress and says 'Honey, could I have a quickie?'

"The waitress is horrified and says, 'Mr. President, I thought you would bring in a new era of morals and virtues to the WHite House. I'm sorry I ever voted for you!' She storms off.

"Dick leans over to the pResident and says, ' George... I think it's pronounced "QUICHE".'"
