bought all the letters for "GIT-R-DONE" and stuck them on his rear window.

6. I come from a working-class background
and, frankly, I find "Blue Collar TV" (from what I've seen of it) insulting to blue collar people; yet so many seem to love it.

I come from a more urban working-class experience as opposed to a rural one, so maybe that explains it (Blue State blue collar vs. Red State blue collar).

5. I saw it on a license plate on the Va. Peninsula
GETRDUN

I'll bet they are the envy of everyone they know.

I first heard "Larry the Cable" guy on a Baltimore morning show and I thought he was hilarious. I thought it was supposed to be an old drunken jaded man but apparently not. BTW this was in '98 and his political commentary was much different than today (such as there is) he absolutely ridiculed the Repubs for the Clinton witchhunt but then one of the three hosts had a weekend political show that was VERY liberal so maybe "Larry" was tailoring it to the audience.

10. I watch..
.. all of the "Blue Collar" stuff, and some of it is really funny.

Larry the Cable guy always does the "poke fun at liberals" schtick on the 30-minute show, but if you watch his solo performances it's pretty clear that he's no conservative :)

As for what "git-r-done" means, it is like a really great song lyric. Everyone can interpret it according to their own experience. :)

One had:

My husband had to explain it to me the first time I saw it. Didn't know from Larry the Cable Guy, back then.

16. It's the "Er" that bugs me the most.
Something sexist about getting her "done" ... Why is the thing they need to get done, female? Is it some sort of testosterone thing? I've never heard a woman use that phrase.

18. I had never implied gender in the "er" until just now, actually.
I had assumed that the "er" was actually a shortened, dialect-driven version of "it". The simple fact is that a hard "t" in the middle of the catch phrase would break the rhythm of the phrase itself. It has to be something you can hollar while drunk and disorderly (in this case) in order to be funny.

21. It may have come from "her" but I don't think it still means "her".
At least, not in this context. I can see that it might also have come from "her" (as many times her is used in place of it to denote some sort of personification, such as calling a ship "her"). However, in the context of how the phrase is used, when it is used as more than something that is just randomly shouted to the delight of the crowd, the best translation I can come up with is:

"My accomplishments prove my great value and worth."

I've heard it in reference to attracting women, sure. But I've also heard it in reference to fixing an engine block or chopping down a tree. I've heard it in reference to catching a particularly large fish. I've heard it in reference to a sports-related victory. That's why I believe the "er" transcends gender associations.

. . . and I cannot believe I am talking about this.

23. Of course it applies to things not female... that was my entire point.
That this phrase uses the pronoun (implied or not) "her" (much like it is used to describe a ship)... Why? "Get It Done" makes a lot more sense if there's no underlying sexism. And that's the whole point about this kind of sexism... it's hidden, it's everywhere, it's even in such harmless phrases as "get er done."

Why can't you believe you're talking about this? You're the one who responded.

24. We're having a linguistic discussion about Larry the Cable Guy.
That's the part I can't quite believe. :P

Though the thing about him is that, even if that really "is what he is like" his routine is very carefully crafted. Specificly, the way he tells his jokes and uses his words to preclude the one or two "obvious, self-denegrating facts" until the punchline often requires some lingual acrobatics. So I don't think he makes very many unconcious decions concerning wording. Especially not with something that he branded right away as a catchphrase.

I honestly think, though, that it had more to do with the verbal akwardness of "it" than "er". Now, if there is an implied sexism that helped re-enforce the use of the phrase, I'm not about to discount that. I can even agree with the argument in favor of that standpoint, and it certainly plays to his perceived audience. I just think, from a comic perspective, "er" works better than "it". ;)

26. Larry the cable guy, if he uses a phrase like that...
is perpetuating the problem. But don't mind me, I'm just a woman who's offended by the sexism in the phrase. I have heard this phrase often from men, and every single one of the men that has uttered it (that I have witnessed) has also exhibited other sexist behaviors.

34. Gives a whole new meaning
to the Git-R-Done for Diabetes bracelets they sell at our local Dairy Mart.

Actually, they have a whole display of Git-R-Done merchandise, and every time we are in the store, someone inevitably comes in and shouts Git-R-Done! The display is strategically placed between the door and the beer cooler.

It's sad really....

37. Actually, Larry's dad died from complications from diabetes
and a portion of the proceeds goes to a diabetes charity. So I guess it's not all bad.

Personally, I'm more embarrassed by my fellow Appalachians embracing negative redneck stereotypes than any implied sexism. I know the skit with Larry and the hot chick, etc., but I think the phrase itself doesn't really stir up sexual connotations.

It is weird that we infer gender on inanimate objects. But is calling a ship her sexist?

In this context: We need to finish framing the chicken coop. Let's get-R-done - is the remark sexist? Would it have been sexist if I had said henhouse instead of chicken coop?
