Thanks to Minstrelboy for finding this, it's in LBN but sounds like a joke:

Massive Crack Opens In Earth In Texas

June 23

CLAUDE, TX -- A massive crack in the earth opened up last week in Claude, Texas and its creating a stir among geologists.

Geologists said Tuesday the crack was a joint in the earth's crust. They believe the opening is the result of a weak point in the joint where one spot slips away from the other.

Some parts measure more than 30-feet deep and it drained what use to be a pond. Experts say earth cracks are common but the size of the crack in Claude is not.

12. LAst baby class last night
9 PM makes for a long day.

Learned a lot but I am glad it is over. The instructor waited for the end to inform us about C-Sections (my wife freaked out of course and is sure she is going to have to get one now :eyes: ) PostPartum Depression and the post partum hygiene stuff. It was a real eye opener.

19. seriously
the cracks are insane and they really do get several inches deep. Conversely, when the soil is wet it expands tremendously, which is why slab houses in Texas are such a stupid idea.

Fortunately my house sits on a solid limestone shelf covered with three feet of soil so it's pretty stable, but the funny thing about "the crack" is that the Austin Chalk Formation is supposed to be one of the most geologically stable parts in the southwest. I guess not!
