Columnist Has Seen "More Breasts Than David Hasselhoff"
<snip>

In the past few weeks, I've seen more breasts than David Hasselhoff. I've seen regular cleavage (due to plunging necklines), side cleavage (due to seductively large arm holes) and even butt cleavage (due to an apparently widespread mirror shortage). And that was just on Walnut Street.

The topic of modesty sounds so hopelessly schoolmarmish in this sex-saturated world that it's easy to dismiss. Just the word conjures up images of Victorian pantaloons and flannel underwear. However, modesty is a forgotten virtue that could benefit modern society — especially this month as the temperature increases and the amount of clothing naturally decreases. But this practical peep show is not good for anyone, especially women and girls.

Why?

First, it automatically introduces a sexual element to all interactions. For decades, feminists have correctly decried how some men see females as merely a collection of body parts. But judging from what some professional women wear to work, you'd think they get their fashion tips from Hooters and their tight-fitting clothes from Babies R Us. I don't care how smart you are, it's just plain hard to concentrate on the latest economic numbers when a co-worker's nipples are poking through her spaghetti-strapped shirt. Now, don't misunderstand. There are times when sexual tension and interaction is appropriate. But not when working, buying coffee from the local street vendor or picking up your kid from kindergarten.

Secondly, immodesty is ultimately less erotic than restraint. Most men will concede that a slim ankle peeking out from a well-cut skirt is much more alluring than casually overexposed body parts. That's because femininity plus a little reticence is as intriguing and enduring as Mona Lisa's smile — much sexier than silicone-enhanced double D's. Far from being an unfair double standard, this gives women power. It lets us control access to our bodies instead of yielding that access to every construction worker and corner creep on the street. And it enhances the eroticism of finding a potential mate, because nothing is more alluring than that ultimate seduction. (With the casual nature of sexual conquests these days, there's no seduction necessary.)

Lastly, this lack of restraint teaches our young girls the wrong lessons. Last year, my daughter got a flirtatious-looking "Bratz" doll out of a Happy Meal which had makeup, enormous pouty lips and an exposed midriff… evidently from the McDonald's Skank-Ho collection. In fact, some of these dolls come in "club" gear complete with short skirts, studded jewelry and thigh-high boots. (These make Barbie look like the doll equivalent of Janet Reno.) The only thing missing from the package is a miniature STD test kit.

6. yes, seems kind of odd that its targeted so young
I mean, I was looking for sheets for my 2 year old's bed, and had to choose between Disney sheets with Snow White, Sponge Bob & Bratz... and, this was the young kid's section. (I chose snow white...)

I by no means a prude or anything... but, it does seem more appropriate for older kids.

12. I agree.
Genetically, I was destined for big boobage. By the age of 20, I was a D. After I went on the Pill, I became a DD. Now motherhood has pushed me into a G cup and I am counting the days until I can afford reduction surgery. Why do I want to reduce? Is it the back pain, the awkwardly fitting clothes, the ugly bras?

No. It's because stupid men ogle big boobies. And that's annoying. It's one thing to look. It's another thing to be the creepy coworker who says to me at least once a week, "That's a very pretty blouse you're wearing," and then try to retain me in a very boring and awkward conversation while not so subtly checking out the mammaries. And trust me, I'm not a flaunter. Back in the day, I was very good about hiding my light under a basket - I've surprised a share of men with the ampleness of my bosom.

MY POINT IS that all these tank tops and ass cracks and nippleicious costumes do nothing but encourage stupid men in their ogling. It's providing a training ground for imbecility.

As my husband explained to his sixteen year-old nephew last summer, "Look, and then look away. It's okay to look man, but be cool, always be cool."

16. hey Dora
it doesn't just take big boobs - I've always avoided any kind of form-fitting clothing due to the f***ing juvenile looks from juvenile men - and I do not have huge boobs. Although I have no doubts big boobage certainly compounds the agony.

22. Yes, juvenile is as juvenile does
I guess I'm feeling like a monstrosity most days, and the asshats who don't know how to disguise a stare just compound that feeling.

I know I am not alone.

My daughter (8) collects all of that crap. I don't get it. I won't let her dress like that or cop the attitude of those characters.

15. One thing that gets me about this...

So what are you supposed to wear in the Summer? Wearing shorts and a tank top isn't appropriate or is it only inappropriate if someone's got bigger breasts? Why can A and B cups wear certain things and it's fine, but when others do, it's somehow "dirty"? Are we supposed to either cut up our bodies surgically or just overdress for the weather if we're built a certain way to please the "offended"? :wtf:

I'm not talking about workplace attire (Hell, I wear scrubs at work, so it's moot) which I agree should be more modest, but just in general for casual wear.

Edit:
Yeah, Bratz doll are weird. Glad I don't have little girls.

17. come on Sarah
they're not talking about simple shorts and tank tops which will always be in fashion - they're talking about wearing clothes three sizes too small, exposing large portiions of your but and almost displaying nipplage - they are pushing it to the extreme these days

18. I know. I know.
I just still get crap sometimes on a personal level (usually from other women). I'm too old to dress like a uber hoochie, but I don't like to feel as though I can't be comfy when it's hot either. It seems like it's always a balance there for me in terms of perceptions of others.

21. LOL yeah
it's a word I came up with recently to describe a rather buxom gal at work who wears too low-cut stuff - no, it is not attractive at all - "she's damn near displaying nipplage" :D
