Throwing a non-sequitur is like saying something out of left field so to speak. My Latin is pretty bad, but that looks a little like the Spanish for "does not follow."

It's an attempt to make a relevant statement that fails. Bad logic, in other words. Saying something completely unrelated is called changing the subject. The comment should be related somehow to the preceeding argument, without being a logical continuance of the argument.

Something like: We have a strong military, so we are smarter than France. If you say we have a strong military, and the Easter Bunny is a pagan symbol, that's not really a non-sequitur, just a non-related statement.
