The plural of you is NOT yooze!!! (or trapped in unemployment hell) |
|
Under threat of having my pittance of an unemployment check taken away (I work part-time and after they deduct my pay, I get barely anything.) I had to attend an orientation and testing session.
The person leading the session kept on referring to the group as yooze — "When we complete the orientation, yooze will begin the testing." "Yooze can benefit from all the stuff we have in the training lab." I don't live in Brooklyn and it wasn't accompanied by "guys" as in "yooze guys."
On top of that, the information sheets they gave us were full of capitalization and grammatical errors.
Excuse me for sounding elitist, but :wtf: These people are going to help me?!?!? And I don't have a job and these people do?!?!?!
Tomorrow I have an appointment with her for "placement counseling." Do you think they'll lose my file if I point out to her there is no such word as yous, unless it's the plural of ewe, and bring back red ink-stained corrections of their informational sheets?

Of course it's not....it's ya'll! (Well, it is here, anyway.)
I feel your pain about the the unemployment people. I took a typing test at mine, then it wouldn't print. The woman spent thirty minutes trying to get it to print, but it never would. Every day for a week, I was told to check back the next day. At the end of the week, I was told to go to another office to take the test, since I needed a copy of the results.

10. I guess I'm missing something |
|
or perhaps I'm old-fashioned. I just believe professionals and people in business settings need to speak proper, standard English. If I went on a job interview and spoke like that, I don't think I would get hired. The people in the unemployment office, especially those making presentations, should set an example.
Also, they are testing us on basic language skills. Shouldn't their own handouts pass muster?
I really don't think I'm asking for too much here.

I don't understand that stuff, either. We have teenagers where I work that call customers....this REALLY bothers me....."Dude". WTF is that?!?!
I would point it out to her, but that's me. I have a bad habit of doing that! :)

Yes to your question; those in power in our day and age don't want smart people working for them, which is one of the reasons why this country is falling apart IMHO
