Why does drinking in the sun hit you quicker?
I've got no idea whether there is an actual reason.

I'm a fairly well-trained drinker (to say the very very least), but this afternoon I got in from work and sat in the sun with a glass of gin (made very long) and afterwards when I stood up felt a tad dizzy. The same happened yesterday with some Pimms.

Has anybody else noticed that when drinking in the sun (or is it heat?), the alcohol seems to affect you more quickly?

1. Alcohol is dehydrating.
So is the sun.

13. Makes sense.
I wouldn't mind - but I was reading a fascinating book, and my concentration levels dropped through the floor (which I know can be caused by dehydration).

4. Yes....
I think it has something to do with the rate that your body dehydrates/hydrates...

learned about this first hand on a Florida beach with Vodka and Gatoraide mixed....

7. lol..
I have a friend who was mixing vodka and Powerade one night...one of my friends was saying "there has to be a reason why more people don't do that..."..and another said "It's probably sending your body mixed messages..get drunk..run a mile!!".

You're only the 2nd person I've heard of doing this. :)

after two or three...I fell asleep on my beach towell. Fortunately, one of my fraternity buddies flipped me over every half hour so I wouldn't get "overdone" on one side from the sun......

16. Only our one friend did..
And he's the same one who insists putting cheap vodka into a Brita filter turns it into Grey Goose, so we all thought he was silly. :silly:

The rest of all do drink the Gatorade/Powerade post-alcohol. Probably similar effect as mixing. :)

Once you finally slip into sleep, though, lucid dreaming is a snap.

And let me tell you -- lucid dreaming is fantastically cool.

Lucid dreaming while you're drunk -- there's really no comparison.

5. It better to have those frosted beverages.....
made with lots of ice (mudslides) etc. you get more H20 into the system along with the booze. Gin is a killer.

And so much prefer gin to the (generally sweeter) drinks.

But I do my best to drink bucket-loads of water throughout the day.

11. Not now.
That was a few hours ago, the sun is setting now.

But it was gorgeous whilst I was out there. Beaming sun warming, a perfectly chilled drink in hand - the cares of the day ebbing away.

You should try it some time. :P

Whether farenheit or celsius.

But the difference between Kelvin and Celsius at 14 million, I guess, isn't significat.

Try mowing the lawn in the center of the sun. It ain't easy.

The really pernikety side of me wants to say that there's no such thing as degrees kelvin - I'm fighting hard to restrain myself though.

I'd rather have Kelvin than Celsius.

Both are better than Farenheit.

Kelvin is for scientific study - it being an absolute scale, rather than a matter of degrees (quite literally).

Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 03:40 PM by CottonBear
Obviously, I'm not British. Is Pimms a mixed drink or a brand of liquor? I am eagerly awaiting your response!

Cheers! CottonBear :)

edit: Drink a glas of water in between each drink. That will help!

30. Heaven in a glass
It's a drink based on gin with the addition of quinine and a secret mixture of herbs (it was originally to be taken as a tonic), it comes out of the bottle at 25% a.b.v.

It is usually mixed with lemonade (though ginger beer can be used apparently, or champagne), in a large glass (traditionally a pint) with lots of ice, plus lemon, orange, apple cucumber and fresh mint.

There's some chat about it on a booze blog: http://www.spittoon.biz/archives/pimms_and_pimms_based_cocktails.html

to see if they carry Pimms No1. Pimms sounds yummy!

I may try this one for starters:

Pimms and Ginger
1 measure of Pimm`s
3 measures of Ginger Ale
1 slice of lemon
1 slice of Cucumber
1 slice of Apple
Fresh Mint

Thanks again and greetings from Georgia in the lovely Southeastern USA. Today is the second day of summer and the weather is perfect for having a cool drink by the pool. I intend to do just that when I arrive home this evening!
:) :toast:
