Puppy stomping - unbelievable
Mr. Sui and I were just returning to the casa from dinner, driving down the road and I look up and there is a 6'3" kid who trains at a boxing gym jumping up and down on a pile of screaming puppy.

Mr. Sui pulls over and I get out of the car and confront the kid (20's?) and he starts screaming vileness at me, spits on me, twice, and then (stupidly) proceeds to take some straight-on jabs at me, which I easily parry, while I am lecturing him on the basics of right and wrong.

After the second poorly executed right cross, he belatedly figures I'm about to rip his head off and shit down the stump with both hands tied behind my back and wisely stops, and then starts screaming for a witness! He actually ran out into traffic acting like I was attacking him (which I really would never do); he's lucky that the other drivers that had seen him stomping the puppy had already driven past him instead of over him.

I said oh please, I think a witness is going to want to see that pile of mangled puppy behind you. In the meanwhile the puppy has dragged itself off to the nearest house and they have taken him inside and locked the door, and the kid takes off running.

I get back in the car, and Mr. Sui and I drive all the way back to our house, and then turned around but couldn't find the house that took the puppy in - I think it had some broken ribs or a broken shoulder. I was going to pay to take it to the vet. Mr. Sui is a really really good guy - he good naturedly puts up with a lot, including his dudley do-right partner's occasional attempts to singlehandedly save the world from evil puppy stomping creeps.

What kind of sickness is this? How do you start with a baby and end up with a puppy stomping sociopath? I am sad and disgusted and angry all at the same time. I really hope that kid goes home and thinks about why a total stranger would bother to get in his face for half-murdering a puppy. The fact of the matter is, if I didn't know how to take care of myself superbly, he would have actually hurt me pretty badly too, over his "right" to stomp a puppy.

And he had better change his running route because I really hate other people's saliva in this day and age, and I'm afraid I will have to lecture him again AND this time demonstrate that his boxing lessons are getting him nowhere. I'm actually thinking about paying a visit to that boxing gym . . .

The better angels of my nature are struggling with the baser demons of my nature right now. I am understating my anger in the extreme, not at the kid but at what made that kid. Why does the world have this kind of ugliness in it? It's immensely frustrating that it's all around us, that a random moment will take you past it if you have eyes to see, that some of us don't do a better job of raising our kids to have a bit more compassion, a bit more sense.

:(

I saw a guy stomp a puppy and run off? This is Dallas. They would have said it wasn't an emergency and to please call code enforcement.

I suppose they owe me a favor or ten. You're right - they do investigate animal cruelty. I think the kid was just jogging that route for training; I sure hope the neighbors on that street take it from here, but I will file a report anyway.

18. There are animal cruelty laws here in Texas.
Recently, some asswipe was convicted of setting dog on fire for kicks. The dog survived and is now living happily, but scared for life, with a good family who adopted him or her.

and the news media was all over it. The guys who set the dog on fire went to prison - for many years. Their big mistake? They videotaped it!!

19. yes it's against the law
sorry I was a little snarky in that last reply; the cops are really useless. One of my neighbors reported a burglary in progress of a neighbor who had been taken to the hospital with heart problems.

The kids stayed in her house for almost thirty minutes. The cops showed up, never got out of the car, drove off, and then the kids returned and finished robbing her house.

I filed a report on the cops procedure on behalf of my Gladys Kravitz neightbor with internal affairs investigations but was given the runaround - they said I'd given the wrong house number, the wrong street, the wrong time, it was closed and couldn't be reopened unless the neighbor herself reported it, etc., etc. The IA detective on the last call called me at home during the day (instead of cell phone) and said that I needed to return his phone call within thirty minutes or the case would be permanently closed and I'd have to go re-file it to continue the investigation.

The kid would have long been gone if I'd called the cops. Animal Control would have showed up and written a $300 ticket to the people who took it in for Animal At Large and called it a day.

SPCA needs to know just to have an incident on their radar and a description of the guy - so I'll let them know.

39. follow up - I did file a police report
with the local neighborhood division. They're more "hands on" than downtown, and said they'll keep an eye out for a fellow of his description. They did say animal cruelty was an allowable 911 call, fyi.

I'm also going door to door this afternoon to find out what happened to the puppy. I really can't imagine it survived - it was pretty gruesome and he was jumping straight up and down on it as hard as he could; you just can't do that without causing some kind of serious internal injury. When we went back through the neighborhood, nobody answered their doors, so I don't know which one took him/her in.

I'm still deeply angry - the aggressive side of me regrets not administering equally violent instant justice and the rational side of me said it would have been equally wrong, and all that puppy knows is that humans are hateful.

I could never be a social worker, ever. It would kill me.

So half kill a puppy today, his girlfriend tomorrow, his kid, anyone he disagrees with - this is not going to turn out to be a good human.

It's more surreal than anything.

it is always the helpless that suffer the most at the hands of abusers - a child wants nothing more than loving parents and a puppy trusts everyone. I'm still just sick right now, I can't get the image out of my head.

37. You sure the kid wasn't doing PCP?
Though if he was, you'd probably have needed to brought a cannon to make him stop what he was doing.

Hey, we have something in common: Mrs R. would readily identify with the phrase you wrote: "dudley do-right partner's occasional attempts to singlehandedly save the world from evil puppy stomping creeps."

She worries about me a lot, and rightly so. But at least I don't jump out of pwrfectly good airplanes anymore, I did promise her I'd stay in them until they land, and have kept that promise. So far.

Self-absorbed wanderings aside, you done good. You must always try to help those less fortunate then yourself....

41. It's called a haymaker
I have found it best used when interrupting folks in the act of cruelty upon animals and women (sorry, my only opportunities thus far).

To apply said haymaker, all one needs to do is get close to said offender. All the better if he's swinging at you (self defense or harmonization...for the buddhists in the crowd). Basically, it entails swinging one's entire arm as if one were to cut the offender's head off, striking, normally with the crux of the elbow/forearm area. Once off his feet, a swift blow to the chest or throat finishes the game (if one can't breathe, one can't run/fight). If you miss, it's nice in that your elbow is now behind his spine/neck. Delivery is as simple as the morning paper. Even better should you be able to bring your knee to meet his chest/chin at the same instance.

I don't care what made him. If you victimize the defenseless, an animal, child, the elderly, or otherwise, I'm more than happy to take up their cause and ask what made you at another time.

Good on you for being your brother's keeper.

42. heh heh
I've been doing REAL kickboxing (not the silly gym stuff) for longer than that kid has been alive, and that's not hyperbole.

Interrupting a criminal act, if you can do it safely, is a worthy thing to attempt, but administering justice as a vigilante, as tempting as it was, is still not within my ethical spectrum. I did file a police report. In retrospect I should have incapacitated him without hurting him too much and kept him there for the police - but I don't normally do these things and didn't have a playlist. I am concerned about really ever being in a fight with a non-pro. My kicks land at between 900 and 1100 psi and I am really really fast. I really could hurt someone not trained to fight very badly before I was even fully aware I'd done it, and especially when I was already dangerously biased against their survival.

Like I said, the better angels of my nature . . . were working overtime.
