My kid was offered a job at Abercrombie & Fitch today
"Group interview" next Tuesday. She is ecstatic, I'm not. She looks at it as acceptance, validation. I mean what 17 year old doesn't have insecurities? Abercrombie & Fitch think I'm pretty enough to work for them? Whoa - this is mind-blowing.
She just told me a few minutes ago, as I picked her up from her current(and brand new) job in the mall. I didn't tell her my feelings, that I think A&F cross the line in their half naked teenie bopper advertising , and that their hiring practices are probably flat-out discriminatory. She's very aware and knows this too, she's commented on it before, but I guess the thrill of actually being offered a job there changed her mind, at least temporarily.
We'll see tomorrow when we talk about it again.

1. Being offered a job by A&F means you're pretty
Being pretty enough to be offered a job by A&F and having the integrity and dignity to turn it down means you're beautiful.

Just sayin'.

2. I couldn't agree more
but I wasn't prepared to go into that in the car on the way home.
I do think she will change her mind. But damn was she ever happy tonight. I wasn't going to slap her back into reality right away.

6. you know she will
besides you *have* to wear the store's clothes..same with Express. I spent a lot of money on clothes the first 2 weeks I worked there..years ago. Sucked.

7. Good for her. The ego boost will carry her far, and the lesson
she learns, assuming she has the values you know she has, will help her quickly grow beyond the need for that approval.

Meanwhile, be proud of her. She's achieved something important to her. There aren't enough moments in a teen's life that boost confidence that way.

8. I talked to a kid who used to work there one time
He had on a "Abercrombie and Bitch" tee shirt on. He hated working there, said they were terrible employers. Had a job at an fairly nice mens clothing store at the mall, and was much happier.

9. She's just a teenage girl
Let her enjoy herself for the moment. My guess is that she will find out that working at ANF is all that glamorous.

10. It's a rip off
She will probably get like $7 an hour, and she'll be forced to buy abercrombie clothes to wear every day. All of her money will go into clothes!
