So, how about a Bill Hicks appreciation thread?
I posted one earlier, then was immediately distracted, and it's apparently been deleted - not even locked. Guess I should have said it was a Bill Hicks appreciation thread, and not just a "let's hunt and kill Billy Ray Cyrus" thread.

Well, lesson learned.

My contribution is, then, a reminder of the bit about "This is my last show. Yeah, I'm getting a TV show called 'Let's Hunt Down and Kill Billy Ray Cyrus."

I love Bill Hicks!

2. I'm down w/ that...
I've got Bill's "Dinosaurs" and "great times on drugs" riffs in the roation of my show.

The guy was the best stand-up philosopher/comedian that ever was, and the absolutely eerie thing about his Bush I riffs is how perfectly they sound today w/ W running the country into the ground.

I've love the guy since I saw him on Letterman, and when he died it was the 3rd time I've ever cried over a "famous" person (Bukowski and Lennon being the others).

He was a genius, and a true visionary. And may Denis Leary (and Bill Maher to a lessor degree) get the shit kicked out of them on the other side from Hicks for stealing his material...

3. Were you refering to Charles Bukowski?
I'm a wannabe poet and I have a Bukowski book with me right now by my computer. I think they are poems that were first published posthumously.

5. Yep
Bukowski is my hero; he kept me alive for a long, long time through my own endless years riding the faceless buses around the country, and he made me want to become a writer, too.

I exchanged letters w/ him for a time in the early 90's when he was sick, and I treasure those letters. I miss him very, very much..

7. Bukowski is in part responsible for my
desire to be a writer. I saw a guy who was just writing about life. Writing in a way that everybody can understand. Not everybody can write like Bukowski, but he made it possible for people to see that poetry doesn't have to be complex and structured. It can be just about your life experiences and pouring your heart out on paper.

8. Exactly
He was hated by the highbrow because he was a poet w/o pretension, and he said more w/ less than just about anybody this side of Sherwood Anderson in my mind. I dedicated both my books to him; hell, he waspretty much beside me in spirit when I wrote them..

I know Hicks loved Bukowski as well; I always had in my mind those two getting roaring drunk together and just shooting the shit w/ the tape rolling....

I'm serious about the blog, too; you should do it..

9. Chomsky with dick jokes
I have A lot of his cds on my hard drive, and I have the dvd as well. Can't get enough of that shit. The first time I ever listened to him (maybe a year ago, if that) I had no idea he was dead. I thought he was brilliant then. When I found out he died in '94 myy mind was completely blown. So visionary. I thought he was talking about G-Dub, when alll the while he was talking about Poppy.

If only we had such a passionate voice on our side now. There might be some passionate people out there, but nobody who even comes close to Bill.

13. It's just a ride....
"The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey – don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride ..." And we ... kill those people. Ha ha, "Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. Jesus murdered; Martin Luther King murdered; Malcolm X murdered; Gandhi murdered; John Lennon murdered; Reagan ... wounded. But it doesn't matter because: It's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love.

The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace......"

As was Radiohead's "The Bends".

And Bill opened a bunch of shows for Tool back in the early '90s.

21. My niece and nephew played me some tool over the weekend
They polayed "Third Eye" and my first thought was "Sounds like Bill Hicks". Then, lo and behold, there is Bill's voice coming over the song! I said, "Do you know who this is?" And they didn't know, so I said, "This is Bill Hicks, comedian and prophet. I have a lot of his stuff, I'll burn you some CDs".

27. I was thinking about him earlier today. Specifically
I was in Nashville, Tennesee last year. After the show I went to a Waffle House. I'm not proud of it, I was hungry. And I'm alone, I'm eating and I'm reading a book, right? Waitress walks over to me: "<smack smack smack smack> Hey, whatchoo readin' for?"

Isn't that the weirdest fucking question you've ever heard? Not what am I readING, but what am I reading *for*? Well, godammit, ya stumped me! Why do I read? Well... hmmm... I dunno... I guess I read for a lot of reasons, and the main one is so I don't end up being a fucking waffle waitress.

30. Love the lastline in this exerpt
Kennedy, I love talking about the Kennedy assassination because to me it's a great example of, er, a totalitarian government's ability to, you know, manage information and thus keep us in the dark any way they... Oh sorry wrong meeting... Ah shit. That's the meeting we're having tomorrow at the docks. I love talking about Kennedy. I was just down in Dallas, Texas. You know you can go down there and, er, to Dealey Plaza where Kennedy was assassinated. And you can actually go to the sixth floor of the Schoolbook Depository. It's a museum called... 'The Assassination Museum'. I think they named that after the assassination. I can't be too sure of the chronology here but... Anyway they have the window set up to look exactly like it did on that day. And it's really accurate, you know, cos Oswald's not in it.
