Poll question: Do you judge a stranger's intelligence just by looking at them?
I'm not talking about hair color or skin color or clothing or height. I'm talking about the eyes.

I'm wrong sometimes (for instance, I really didn't think the guy who worked with me at the record store for two years was all that smart...and then I found out he was brilliant and I married him), but more often than not I find that that first impression is fairly spot-on.

1. No. I judge their intelligence by whether or not they have
a shrub sticker on their car. If they do, they are an automatic moran.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 12:28 PM by Lavender Brown

To answer your question, I try to avoid judging on appearance, unless there is something that blatantly gives away a lack of intelligence (a certain t-shirt slogan or something). Although I admit my prejudices can get the best of me sometimes, when it comes to physical appearance. I have a vacant look about me much of time, and I hope people don't take that as vacant mindedness. :P

14. Psychology of clothing
What's the first thing you see? How the person is clothed.

If the person chooses to wear clothes that are "symbols" of a certain lifestyle, then you automatically react to those symbols. In a sense, you immediately make a judgement about the lifestyle, politics and even intelligence of the person based on your experiences with that lifestyle.....

25. It's not just what is worn.
More so how it is worn.

I know people who would look immaculate if they'd just finished diggin ditches wearing jeans and a t-shirt - other's who'd look a total mess after spending hours on bedecking themselves in finery.

And then I note strongly that some people who look immaculate are splendid, and some are ghastly - some people who always look a mess are splendid and some are ghastly. There's different types of just about everything.

20. I do make a lot of pretty quick 'judgements' BUT am always ready
to re-evaluate.

Mostly my instincts are pretty good (in real life - on-line they're crap beyond belief), but one should always keep an open mind about other folk.

B.T.W. the story sounds so sweet :hi:

32. Yes, and there is a scientific basis for it.
There are certain facial features that are tied with mental traits. Mouth-breathers, for example, often have a pout, what we call the "fly-catcher" face. Downs syndrome is too obvious, but there are others.

35. I try not to, even once they start talking.
First impressions can be wrong for lots of reasons. People have bad days, have lots of influencing factors. Of course I judge people by looking at them, but try to not let that totally guide my behavior and thoughts about them.

People often think I'm uppity when they meet me, but really I'm just shy. online is different.

38. One time I was out with my kids
I'll admit -- at Burger King because it was rainy and we needed a place to run around (it was one of those tube climby areas). A guy walked by who sent shivers down my spine from just a split second glance. He had a look of stupidity/anger/insecurity all rolled into one. Then a few minutes later I saw he was wearing a "Promise Keepers" hat.

Then again, my husband works out at a place where there's a big muscle-bound, loud-mouthed guy. My husband always assumed he was a Freeper type. Then one day my husband wore a T-shirt that said "The Nation" (magazine). The guy came over and started talking politics and he was the biggest Bush-hating liberal you'd ever want to know.
