Have you tried not answering? (I know, you want to know who it is, just asking)
One day, we got like 10 to 15 calls in not even one hour. Annoying as hell. We couldn't even see the number.

5. This is a spoofed ANI number. |
|
800 numbers don't initiate calls. They only receive them.

Made up by whoever placed the call to falsely display on your CNID or on *69. There is software available that will do this. And on large PBX's it is very easy to change the calling number ID for someone so inclined to do so. Of course if they get caught by the telco.....

9. So I did the right thing by calling the FCC? |
|
I hate the calls that I've been getting..
I got one last night for a free cruise. Told them I am not interested and I am on the do not call list. He proceeds to tell me that hes not a sales call and rambles on. Told him that I once again am not interested and I'm turning him into the FCC and he hung up.

If they're calling you they are probably calling many others. The FCC can get with your local telco's Security/Fraud Dept and eventually track them down. They are trying to get around the do-not-call registry with a bogus ID and this is illegal. Thing is though that they might be offshore and then the FCC can't do a hell of a lot about it. There are a lot of scams like this operating in the Carribean.

15. It could be an automated system which is looking for |
|
either a answering machine or a fax machine. More likely the answering machine. If a human picks up it cuts off and will try again at a different time of day.

22. It's a "predictive dialer." |
|
Calls five or ten numbers, and the telemarketer picks up the first one that answers.
Any one of the other numbers dialed gets "dead air" if they pick up the phone.
Predictive dialers are, I think, illegal in many states.

8. I'm On the Do-Not-Call List |
|
And Nextel continuously calls me (shows up on Caller ID as "Unknown Caller" and a 1-866 number). They are trying to reach my ex-fiance, who took off on me a year and a half ago. I have repeatedly told them she does not live here and that I'm on the DNC list and please stop bugging me (they call at least once, sometimes two or three times a day). Sometimes they say they'll take me off the list, but they always call again the next day.
I even had one guy tell me that because they are not calling ME (they're calling my ex who doesn't live here anymore), that I cannot tell them to remove my number from their list. I'm guessing based on their bad fucking attitudes that they are bill collectors or something. I don't know though.
In any event, if it continues too much longer I will escalate it.

10. I've been getting a call to my cell phone, starting 3 days ago, that |
|
is an automated message that says "this is not a solicitation or telemarketer call, please call back at the toll free number, 800-xxx-xxxx extension(or code can't recall) xxxx".
Anyone know what the fuck that's about? And is anyone stupid enough to return and unsolicited call to an 800 number like that?

to what is really an overseas company that can charge as much per minute as they want and since they sucker YOU into making the call, there really is no defense.

14. Verizon Offers A Service That Requires All Callers To Enter A PIN... |
|
... before they can cause your phone to ring. If the caller does not know the PIN, they get a "dead-end" recording letting them know that you're not accepting calls. OR... you can optionally have the call forwarded to voice mail.
Other features of the service allow you to pre-program certain numbers that will ALWAYS ring through (without having to enter in the PIN).
It's only an extra $3.00 per month... and well worth it.

PS: And I'm not a Verizon stock-holder... nor do I work for Verizon.

19. They're usually collectors |
|
I had one constantly calling me for nearly two years looking for someone else. I was at work so I could never intercept them. I finally got them on a day off and informed them they had the wrong guy. They usually have that long pause as the computer auto dialer connects to an operator

Here is the CIC code and carrier
--------- E800 Query Results for 866-489-7864 ROUTING DN: 866-489-7864 CIC: 0432 CARRIER: Qwest Communications ---------
You would have to call Qwest to find out which bastard company owns that number. You may be able also to call 800 information to get the name of the company, but it may not be listed.

I just checked and it's (as well as variations) on my caller ID numerous times. The one who called it a "predictive dialer" is right. Anyway, it's someone trying to sell you credit card insurance. I was getting hammered by these bastards earlier this Spring and it was driving me insane, since I'm also on a "don't call" list and have been for years, way before it became federal (I'm in NY, where we've had it for much longer).
