47. Rutabagas A La Geaghan (Ya gotta read this!)
Recipes
An Irish Classic: Rutabagas A La Geaghan

Peel and cut up 8-10 fresh rutabagas
Boil vigorously 21-25 days or until softened
Soak for 72 hours in 2 gallons of hydrochloric acid Drain and then mash or pulverize into a thick smoldering paste
Add 1/2 cup 2% milk
Add cinnamon, salt and butter to taste
Serve dripping with brown gravy or other sauce to enhance the pungent natural flavor of the rutabagas

Rutaburgers: In the unlikely event of leftovers, mold into thick "rutaburger" patties, bake for 14 hours at 750 degrees in a prewarmed oven and brown on a grill or frying pan. Serve piping hot in a moat of thick gravy.

or go without."

The nights that liver was for dinner, I was only too happy to go to bed hungry.

15. Hey, we like rhubarb
I make a wonderful rhubarb crisp. The secret to rhubarb is sugar. Brown sugar. Add lots and lots of brown sugar.
Rhubarb also makes a delicious (and pretty) sauce for meat, particularly pork.

34. My DH and I are with you..
we really enjoy rhubard cooked up with sugar as a sauce.

My much loved and now late MIL showed me how to cook it up many years ago shortly after we moved in to take care of her and my now late FIL. We enjoy it plain, over ice cream or as a meat sauce. I'll have to look up the crisp recipe now though, if it's done like a blueberry crisp I'll bet it's wonderful. :)

39. You can use your favorite blueberry or apple crisp
recipe. The one I use is from an apple crisp recipe. I buy rhubarb, chop it into little chunks, add sugar, and freeze. I grew up in the Midwest where it was plentiful. But since we've lived in Atlanta, we've found when we've served rhubarb crisp, many people are having rhubarb for the first time. My son and daughter are fans -- particularly when served with ice cream.

51. Thank you...
I'm definitely going to try it then. :) Hmm.. let's see... Rhubarb Cobbler with a scoop of Ben & Jerry's Vanilla Ice cream... sounds good to me. :)

Next week I'll have to grab some fresh rhubarb when we go visit my DD. If time wise it's okay we'll also bring the plants back from there and transplant them to our new one. (It's our old house where my DD lives now and she doesn't like rhubarb much.)

55. I just bought a house...
that has rhubarb growing in the backyard. I've been threatening for years to grow some, but where I used to live (Cincinnati) it was a little warm and the soil apparently isn't amenable to it. I'm thrilled now to have rhubarb available again (I grew up in the upper midwest).

Got a recipe?
