Poll question: Most hated TV ad jingle
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 10:19 PM by undisclosedlocation
I'm trying to avoid popular songs reframed as ad jingles; trying to stick with stuff that's original as a jingle to the best of my knowledge. Similarly, I'm trying to use only ones with words, though I guess an instrumental can still be a jingle. An exception to both guidelines however is "Sweet Home Alabama" for KFC, just because it's SO FUCKING IDIOTIC STUPID to take a song about Alabama by a band from Florida to promote food that at least ostensibly is from Kentucky.

Great suggestions in your replies, folks. Sorry that edit time once again is running out before I can put them all on.

Didn't put on Other; I figured having an "I hate 'em all!" option was more important. And people had already figured out they could vote Other by replying.:D

6. I never understood why they used...
"Sweet Home Alabama" for Kentucky Fried Chicken... :wtf:

Are they trying to lump in all Southern States or did the song just fire up the red-neck demographic in their test groups. Next thing you know they're going to be re-mixing "Georgia on My Mind"...

9. They've been trying to leave behind Kentucky Fried Chicken for years
They've been going by KFC only for at least a decade. It's probably an attempt, as you say, to associate themselves with Southernness rather than just Kentucky. However, for anybody above the age of 13, they'll forever be Kentucky Fried Chicken, not least because they used to have outstanding jingles back in the day. Some bunch of rocket scientists they are up at Pepsico...

10. Totally agree, but here's a possible explanation...

Perhaps the ad agency was relying on a Stephen Foster connection as the only justification they needed to make the ridiculous leap or lump.

Foster wrote both "My Old Kentucky Home" and "Oh Susanna" which has that age old hook about arriving from Alabama with a banjo attached or near the singer's knee.

28. Then it's time for a new ad agency...
The demographic they're trying to appeal to won't know Stephen Foster from Stephen Tyler. Nice try though... I think you've been watching "Connection" too much (the TV show on TLC that connects to polar events with random facts). :)

7. I go back a ways. So let me nominate a couple of classics
Both sold the same product: Alka Seltzer.

Plop! Plop! Fizz! Fizz!
O, what a relief it is!

That one was really annoying.

Then, if I really want to date myself, there is Speedy Alka Seltzer himself singing:

Down, down, down-the stomach through
Round, round, round the system, too
With Alka-Seltzer you'll surely say,
"Relief is just a swallow away."

That's one of the very first things I remember on television.

13. I think we've got to keep it to ones that are on the air currently
If we open the floor to bad ads from the past, there's an infinite number of contenders. Quite enough to deal with just holding it to the current crop.

Out of the moldy oldy ones, I'd nominate, Meow meow meow meow... etc. ad infinitum. I know the cat people loved it, but it made me want to shoot out the TV. (Not out of anti-cat sentiment, mind you; just an incredibly annoying tune.)

12. Canadian entry:
McCain frozen foods takes MOR rock hits and has someone rerecord them slightly with frenchfry-positive lyrics, and change the music just enough to evade copyright law.

They're always terrible and annoying. If you ever try and invade again, we're dropping McCain jingles on your White House.

Oh well, we have different jingles in Norway, plus I work in advertising and marketing myself, so ..

Worst of all, I'd say ANY McDonalds-jingle.

On the other hand, Lamisil's "Digger" the Dermatophyte is the funniest one out there right now. I like the way Digger kicks the toenail and it pops open. The other commercial has Digger raising the creaky toenail like he's propping open the hood of a car. I even bought this "Digger" clock on ePay.

John Basedow, who had the market on ALL open late night time slots cornered, has gone from mere 30-second slots to full 30-minute commercials. Congratulations.

Billy Mays is and always will be a horses ass.
