Best Album to come out in the last YEAR? |
|
American Idiot is the best I've heard to come out.
I can't even imagine it could be beat, actually. What albums have you guys heard that are THAT good, through and through, in the last year?

Both versions of "the Revolution Starts now",
"Home to Houston" and "Gringo's Tale" these 2 are anti-war songs.
"Condi,Condi" is a riot, about you know who, "people say your cold, but I think you're hot!"
"Fuck the FCC" is another good one
Ryan Adams=all of disc 2.

New CD by Ry Cooder, the slide guitarist and producer who put together the Buena Vista Social Club. This one is about a barrio in Los Angeles that was destroyed in an urban renewal scam, and ultimately they built Dodger Stadium on the site. As he did in Buena Vista, Cooder hooked up with a bunch of old musicians who used to perform for that audience, and invited them to perform (and help compose) on the CD.
The story is told in a sort of docu-drama form, in the viewpoints of some of the characters involved. There's one song about Frank Wilkinson, the urban planner, tells how he brought in an architect to design new bungalows to replace the old shanties, and then got accused of communist leanings in the HUAC era and removed from the project. Then there's a song from the point of view of the conniving racist power broker whose vision involves keeping people in their proper place; another about the bulldozer operator just doing his job, which happens to involve knocking down people's homes, another by the poor schlub who's now the parking attendant at the ballfield, who knows that where his home used to be is now third base.
Then there's some recreations of period music, with attitude. One of my favorites is an old Lieber/Stoller song I'd never heard before, called "Three Cool Cats." In a fairer world, this record would be in heavy rotation, it's really good stuff.
