"The Redneck Riviera".
People where I live love to go vacation in Destin, FLA, so much so that the place has gotten this nickname, even among those who vacation there.

Any other choice nicknames for places, vacation spot or otherwise?

1. "Venereal Beach". "Where the Turd meets the Surf".
Referring to Imperial Beach CA, on the Mexican border and a catching area for Tijuana sewage. IB also had a reputation for nasty women back in the 70's-80's.

2. I read somewhere that Tom Waits was from I.B. That'd explain a lot
of the references to Navy and sailors in his early stuff.

15. Its always been a rough beach area.
I used to buy my dope by the IB pier during the 80's.
Tom Waits, eh?

3. The "Redneck Riviera" extends from Mobile, AL to Panama, FL
and my favorite spot. It has the best white quartz beaches in the world.
:hi:

4. LOL!
I grew up going on spring break trips and family vacations at various beaches in the "Redneck Riviera", which actually stretches across a chunk of the gulf coast from Mobile, Ala., to Panama City Beach in Florida. Great memories!

I laughed because I think Destin residents and condo owners would probably like to see their little oasis declared an "exempt" spot on the map that covers the traditional RR territory. It's the rather "upscale" neighbor to most of the other more laid back towns and beaches.

Don't get me wrong, I love Destin. PCB is just more in my price range!

7. PC RULED!
Back in the 50s.
It was our "Where The Boys/Girls Are" Ft. Lauderdale.

"Goin' to PC, man!"
Busch Bavarian beer.
The Casino and the Old Dutch Inn.
I cannot count the times I fell in love.

I regained consciousness spreadeagled on the beach one morning surrounded by fiddler crabs.
Scarey.

Between that and my fighter pilot "career" Miz t. sez "It's a wonder you're still alive."
Agreed.

5. It also is used in reference to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Always has been, to my knowledge.

6. I just vacationed there recently and the nickname is well deserved.
I was at St. George's Island about 75 miles south of Tallahassee. Totally and completely redneck. The endless confederate flag memorabilia was unnerving.

8. Our mayor hates the term "Redneck Riviera".
Foley, Alabama.
About half-way between Mobile and Pensacola.
15 minutes north of the beach.
He calls it "The Alabama Riviera".

Have to say that we now attract vacationers from all over the world.
In our bars, restaurants and the huge outlet mall you are likely to hear English (accents), French, German, and some languages I can't identify.

10. Also known as "Baja Georgia"
I consider Panama City to be my hometown, but boy am I glad I don't live there.

The beaches are fabulous, but it's solidly Shrub-lovin' territory.

11. The Flora-Bama Lounge and Package Store
is the quintessential Redneck Riviera beach bar.
http://www.florabama.com/

I was down here for a spring break houseparty in '63 and was one of their first customers.

It has become a Redneck Riviera institution.

Back then, Alabama had no Sunday sales of booze.
Florida did.
The Flora-Bama is right on the FL/AL state line ("Do it on the line!") and was a life saver for us Alabamians who didn't plan ahead.

They were pretty much wiped out by Ivan, but are now up and running again.

13. Florabama is rebuilt already
I didn't hear that. I hope it's as good as the original. Of course there was a lot more to the Florabama than the physical structure!
