1. Did you go to bed on an empty stomach? |
|
I was misdiagnosed for several years as having anxiety problems, when the real problem was my blood sugar. For the first 35 years of my life I was able to function properly through the morning with just a piece of toast for breakfast. But, suddenly, everything changed when I hit motherhood. After an especially stressful experience, I began to have what appeared to be panic attacks at night, but what I later discovered was that these were the same symptoms of blood sugar drops. But coming out of a dead sleep, it's difficult to rationalize, so, you panic.
The other problem is over-eating before going to bed. As with everything in life, you've got to find a balance.

2. I ate just a little something before going to bed. |
|
I've been waking with these almost every morning. I wish I could just start my day without one.

4. I've suffered from panic attacks for the past 20 years. |
|
I don't have a cure to offer, but I have found that if I sit or lie quietly for 5-10 minutes, breathing deeply and clearing my mind of stray thoughts, that I can at least get a hold on them and keep them from affecting my day.
Irrationality is so difficult to deal with. But I remind myself that I am neither my thoughts nor my feelings, and this seems to help.
I empathize. :(

But ask you doc to give you a blood sugar test. It is uncomfortable because you have to go four hours in the morning without eating -- only drinking a glucose concoction, and getting your blood drawn every hour -- but if you have it, it could save you from worse problems caused by doctors who misdiagnose you.
By the way, do you wake up and then eat breakfast within half an hour? Or do you lie awake in bed giving yourself too much time to think about things before the symptoms start?

Nothing better, and no pharmacuticals involved. Physical excercise in general is your best friend when it comes to dealing with stress & anxiety.

9. I hope it works out... |

My wife has been having them for a few years. We think the root cause was one of the antidepressants she was on which has since been taken off the market, plus getting really freaked out by a long plane trip to England all by herself. Even though I'm not the one having them I can tell they're no fun.

13. Breathe deeply and tell yourself that |
|
a) this is chemical.. I have nothing to be so worried about (Unless you have a stress in your life that truly needs removing)
b) This too shall pass. It can't last forever
Unfortunately my other solution is to get loaded up on junk food until the "jangles" go away.. but that's not very helpful in the long run healthwise.
