Where do you go to find new music?
I go to these websites:

www.metacritic.com (you'll find that I reviewed many of the albums listed under "Matt" - see user reviews, which are under the critics's scores for each album.)

www.cdbaby.com

www.pitchforkmedia.com (I don't often agree with their reviews, but they review a lot of lesser known artists.)

3. College radio stations. Or one of the last REAL independents,
WPKN in Bridgeport, CT. www.wpkn.org

REAL listener-supported, all-volunteer radio. No ties to any university, NPR, or anyone.

9. I used to listen to PKN.
They had a wonderful eclectic mix. I still miss it & it's been about 20 years (yikes!).

6. I like progressive rock so
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 12:29 PM by salvorhardin
I really recommend listening to these three online radio sites:
Delicious Agony Progressive Rock Radio
Aural Moon: The Net's Progressive Rock Garden
ProgRock.com.

In recent years progressive rock has seen something of a revival so it's great fun finding new progressive bands that are carrying on this great niche, but what I really love is finding older bands and artists that are new to me, especially non-U.S. music. For instance, my latest obsession is the Polish progressive band Turquoise.

Which reminds me, two comprehensive and invaluable review sites out there for progressive rock are ProgArchives.com and The Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock.

While I'm at it, if you're looking for hard to find progressive rock imports then you really need to visit Doug Larson Imports.

7. Thanks, all!

I'll check these out. BTW, on the Metacritic site, all of the "Matt"s that I've seen are my ratings except for the Nine Inch Nails rating. I'd give that a 6 or 7. Sometimes you have to click "see more user reviews" to get to my ratings.

8. It tends to find me. I've got a lot of friends who push music on me
and some of it's very good.

I also stream

www.wfmu.org

www.kcrw.com - there's an article about the "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show at

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/26/magazine/26HARCOURT.html?

and I sometimes listen to Indie 103 (if only for Jonesy's Jukebox)

http://www.indie103.fm/

I get some new jazz ideas (most recently Eldar) from progmom's show at

www.wemu.org

And the local jazz and classical stations here in Portland are good, and they feature a lot of new recordings.

There's also a very good AM station here that the college kids run, and they play a lot of hip-hop and other very underground stuff that you'd never hear otherwise.

A lot of people on DU have good musical suggestions too. I read a lot of DU music threads to try to wake up to more good stuff.

Best wishes.

10. At Raves, And At Tiny Record Stores that Let You LISTEN BEFORE YOU BUY
This reply is oriented towards dance music, and psytrance in particular.

The record/CD stores I go to cater to DJs, and let you listen before you buy.
I tend to do a lot of listening, and quite a bit of buying.

My favorite stores are Ceiba Records and Reverb Records in San Francisco.

If I hear something at a rave that I really like, I'll ask the DJ
after the set is over. They have always been willing to tell me
(though sometimes the track in question is unobtanium out of print).

16. I go to my favorite record store
Amoeba Music in Los Angeles. The staff there is usually insanely knowledgeable and their listening stations let you listen to whole albums in MP3 format before you buy them.
