Blue Collar Comedy on Comedy Central--Am I the only one...?
...eagerly awaiting this show's cancellation. I am a comedy fan and collect comedy tapes, dvd's, etc. I tried to give this show a chance. Unfortunately I don't get a lot of the humour and some of the stuff I get, I find racist and repellant.

I did try... anyone else?

18. I really believe that all the redneck idiot NASCAR Fans are being mocked
by Larry the Cable Guy. I know it's a character, and I really believe taht everything he says is in someway mocking his audience, and they are just too stupid to see it.
And Ron White is fucking hilarious.

You're no saying ALL NASCAR fans are idiots, of course. Are you?

"... everything he says is in someway mocking his audience, and they are just too stupid to see it."

His audience may be too stupid to see it. Those of us who find him offensive aren't in the audience.

33. The only people he is making fun of are people
that are different than the demographic of his audience--blacks, liberals, Jews, Mexicans, homosexuals, etc.

(see posts 11 and 20 for examples of what he has said in his act and on his website).

39. agreed.
my husband is a NASCAR fan, has been for about 20 years ... he's thinks Larry is as stupid as I think Larry is--which is pretty stupid, and not funny.

And what's the big deal about his catch phrase "Git-R-Done" ... that's just dumb. Even Bill Engvall's "Here's Your Sign" makes some sense.

38. Ron White is great!
But I find Larry really, really stupid and not very funny.

Foxworthy and Bill Engvall aren't bad, Ron White is my favorite.

That sketch comedy show is one of the stupidest shows I've ever seen. The Blue Collar Comedy Tour itself was pretty good, but the show, blech.

11. not racist? Then what do you call these items from his act--
Double take--as he spots something behind him. "...oh those are my shadows," he says visibly relieved."I thought a couple of black guys were sneaking up behind me."

Or this quote from his act--

"This is a song about an illegal Mexican hitchhiking through Texas...I call it 'El Paso'"

Or--

"I was more pissed than a queer with lockjaw on Valentine's Day."

The guy is obviously making a living on being racist and intolerant imo (and the opinion of Rolling Stone magazine where the above antidotes are taken from).

I just find it distasteful and apparently it is appealing to a lot of the same folks that voted for this administration.

It's interesting how many people don't even 'get' how racist and homophobic it is. Those jokes don't even register as being wrong for them...

That's disturbing to me.

uses and the stuff Larry the Cable Guy uses.

Just because someone utilizes some racial jokes and stereotypes does not mean they are making a social commentary about it.

The Cable Guy is just feeding into old social steretypes, fears and predjudices and btw, profiting from it big time--just like this administration did.

Larry the Cable Guy is a fictional character played by Dan Whitney. You'll notice that his biographies always give the biography of Larry, and never Dan. It's not just a stage name, either - his biographies are pretty obviously made up.

Have you ever heard of "irony"?

I think his comments from posts 11 and 20 make it quite clear, this isn't some 'home-spun, ignorant, genteel, country boy' character.

But again, you can believe that if you like.

I've read Huck Finn. Mark Twain told a story--he didn't bash racial groups or express intolerance for them. I think there is a difference.

20. Here's some gems of wisdom from Larry The Cable Guy
Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 07:45 PM by DS1
Some left wing lib pinko fag organization has an ad out comparing Hitler to George W. Let me blow this outta the water right now.

Bush invaded a country full of potato head backass Muslims that wanna kill every body that speaks English and Hitler killed 6 million Jews for no reason at all. Good comparison!

Why don't all these retard libs go back to there old jobs of humping endangered critters and leave the comparing to somebody that's got an IQ higher than a bucket of vomit.

Wanna compare somebody to Hitler? How bout the Clinton clan. People disappeared around him faster than a cream filled crueler at the fat Dixie Chick's house!

I cant believe I'm gonna stick up for that walking ad for tampons Hillary Clinton.

Apparently John Kerry and his buddies think only pussies and retards join the National Guard. Therefore, Bush and everybody that has joined the Guard must be pussies. Ask all them National Guardsmen kicking rag head's ass over in sand land if only pussies join the guard.

Ok, let's set the record straight on all the turd burglars and lickolatipusses getting married the past few days. It all boils down to this. These sumbitches could care less about getting married. If they wanted to be together and adopt kids and finger bang one another over ice cream while watching queer eye for the straight guy and Friends than they can do it all day long. This aint about love or being together. If ya think it is than your heads so far up your ass you could poop facial features.

No, racism & homophobia aren't funny & undestandably offensive. My point is that Larry TCG is playing a role. He IS that ignorant racist redneck that is pervasive in our society and IS despicable.
When we can make fun of him and start a dialogue about his stupid views that is what is effective. It's a role that has gotten many comedians misunderstood.

57. I watched one of his DVDs and I do admit laughing to some of his stuff
but I hated the part where he speaks against the Dixie Chicks and says something along the line of "you just dont speak against the president when the majority of your fan base supports him." The crowd seemed to love it. I know that some of his stuff in his comedy routine is somewhat racist, but compared to comedians like Lisa Lampinilli he is not what i would consider overly offensive. As for the comments on his website I find it hard to believe he is making fun of the RW/Bush when he seems to have nothing but hate for Libs.

67. Are you seriously comparing the Smothers Brothers
intelligent, political satire and comedic social commentary to what Larry the Cable Guy is doing?

Just want to be clear...

87. No I should have been more clear, was just comparing the hoopla and
outrage that got them cancelled.

66. While i don't like ANY racial jokes, i find some to be more offensive
than others. To me, his did not seem to be hate filled as 99% of the ones that i have heard in my lifetime.(i am speaking of the dvd i watched) I said somewhat racist b/c it seemed like he was just acting the part of some ignorant redneck and possibly making fun of the people who make those sort of dumb jokes. (stuff like "lord forgive me, be with the starving pygmies in new guinea.)
I do have a different perspective of him now that I read some of the other things he has said and written - I think hes most definately racist himself and I find what he said about Muslims to be very offensive and racist.

69. I just noticed your post count...Welcome to DU, stevans!
:hi:

Hope you make yourself comfortable here in the lounge and enjoy your time on the boards.

Back to the Cable guy...Yeah, his comments (provided by a DU member) really brings his racism and intolerance front and center, don't they?

64. i'm annoyed with their misuse of the phrase "blue collar"
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 01:41 AM by PittPoliSci
Blue collar originally meant urban poor working class, not redneck jack offs.

*on edit*

fixed the subject line.

65. Excellent point, PittPoliSci!
I also thought this. I always thought of the Roseanne show as 'blue collar comedy.' A show about working class people, struggling financially while trying to raise a family.

I don't like the way they have shifted the term to this particular group of people.

68. I work at a blockbuster...
So all the time these jerkoffs come in asking for the "blue collar comedy tour" or Larry the Degenerate.

I always ask them if they know what blue collar actually means, nobody ever does. I'm glad I put my notice in and i'll be gone in 2 weeks. I can't handle it any more.

72. Oh, I'm sorry--I do feel your pain, though.
It's frustrating when people just connect to 'catch phrases' and 'labels' created by the MSM, without taking any time to discern for themselves what something means and if it fits.

More sheep, sadly...

I was surprised to read in Rolling Stone how huge this guy's audience is and how they all seem to 'identify' with the ugly views he expresses...

Really disturbing.

75. Thank you for pointing that out
I don't watch the crap, but I do rankle that they've tarnished the term "blue collar" by conflating it with idiotic rednecks.

77. Yes - That show sucks ass
Although I like Ron White's stand up and guiltily find Larry the Cable Guy's stand up funny in parts albeit mostly juvenile, racist and xenophobic, Foxworthy and the other guy are pure shit hacks and the sketch show itself is total crap. I've watched it a couple times and all's it is is fart jokes, doodie jokes and some bits where they play their "manly" flabbiness for gags by dressing up in leotards / women's bathing suits and trying to synchronize swim / perform gymnastics with inevitably (un)hilarious results... for instance getting clobbered in the balls, naturally. terrible. its a waste of space on Comedy Central where they have and have had so many other cool shows.

Foxworthy is okay when he sticks to his family stuff. Larry the Cable Guy is just flat out disgusting! I cannot tolerate him.

"Here's your sign" has become a standard line in my family when someone says something obvious.

79. The Cable Guy
who is a complete hack, has a Confederate Flag on his guitar. In other words he is a traitor to the United States. How this washes as someone who has "values" is beyond me.

80. I watched some fat guy talk ignorant about 'fat chicks'
and it was pretty demeaning.

Now I'm not one to judge someone on their size, but if you're a guy with a fatass and giant size gut, you might want to think twice about being critical of overweight gals.

81. I think the whole thing's steeped in racism.
It's reactionary towards "The Original Kings of Comedy."

It's bad comedy at its worst. And what they fuck was up with the Jeff Foxworthy Roast? How does a washed up comedian that everybody loves to hate get a "celebrity" roast? Was that sponsored by Sons of the Confederacy?

83. I honestly wondered the same thing...
Why would he get a roast?

I guess because he is part of that suck fest of a show that we are all discussing, they felt sorry for him and threw him a Roast.

What ever...

85. It's today's "Hee Haw".
It's several notches below the subpar "Mad TV"

And to those dumbass rightwingers bitching about this thread (CoUgh CoUgh). We do laugh at ourselves. I loved the bit on SNL about "Blue State Santa" where a sanctimonious Natalie Merchant and Moby were reprimanded by Santa for blowing off all red-staters. I love to laugh at liberals.

Sorry Guys, Blue Collar TV is aimed at people with IQs below 60. We get it, we just don't like it.
