FINALLY!!!
I'm Jazzy like jimmyjazz , but that's not to say I don't listen to jazz artists like progmom.
Anyways, FINALLY progmom is taking me to my first jazz show! I've been before, but always by myself.

What say you, DU'ers? What do you think about Music of the jazz persuasion?

3. Oh, a lot of it is so very good.
And live can be incredible.

Some great musicians, and the language of jazz has so many incredible dialects.

Love it up, lady.

16. wow
she'll be busy just running that all down, Asth.

That's quite a coterie.

I would say have pmom start you off with a list. As far as live music goes, there is too much bland fusion out there in the clubs, and not enough squonking (lots of bleating horns playing tons of scales) for my taste , at least where I live. I would say, some Betty Carter, some Ella Fitzgerald and some Sara Vaughn would be a nice place to start. Too bad none of these amazing women are around any more to see live! Or Miles Davis Kind of Blue.

"Kind of Blue What can you possibly say about this album that hasn't already been said. It is the perfect melding of mood and musicians. It also marked an important turning point for Miles, Coltrane, and modern jazz, relying on modes rather than chord progressions to support the soloists. This is a great place to start if you're not familiar with Miles or modern jazz, as it features several musicians who would become nearly as influential as Davis himself: John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and pianist Bill Evans. A must have. "

When I was in Chicago, I had hoped to hear some avant jazz, but I ended up seeing other people perform al fresco. None of whom were jazz musicians. ;)
