I'm going to be laid up for awhile and joining Netflix to keep me occupied
I hardly ever go see movies and don't keep up with things so I need suggestions to fill up my cue.

I like comedies, but not lame teeny bopper ones
Dramas are good, but not too formulaic
Romance is OK as long as it's not too schmaltzy
Historical movies are interesting

I'm pretty open to a variety of genres, I don't care for scary or violent movies.

So, tell me what movies I should put on my list?

1. Have you seen Dodgeball?
hilarious.

A good drama is "the Assasination of Richard Nixon" with Sean Penn and Don Cheadle

bought it last week and I think it is such a great movie! Annette Bening is wonderful and the last theatre scene is just wonderful.

3. Try these
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I Heart Huckabees
Sideways
Adaptation
Being John Malkovich
The Life Aquatic (or any other Wes Anderson films)
Magnolia
Good Will Hunting
Dazed and Confused
The Big Lebowski
Almost Famous
Mulholland Drive

I'd suggest more, but a lot of my dvd collection is violent and kinda scary, haha.

21. I'm guessing...
you have a bit of a dark streak and appreciate dry/wry humor, Primate. Yet, I fail to see "Rushmore", "Lost in Translation", "Groundhog Day" or "High Fidelity" on your list. Perhaps I'm misreading you. :)

I'm a big Lost in Translation fan, but some people find it boring, so I don't tend to recommend it unless someone specifically asks what I think of it. Groudhog Day I haven't seen in ages, and I don't think I've ever seen High Fidelity.

27. Groundhog Day...
Gotta love that movie. Probably one of the all time funniest films ever made - despite the fact Andie McDowell is in it.

You should check out High Fidelity... it's a John Cusack movie, but Jack Black steals the show. :)

5. The Ref - older movie, but a must see...
it's got Kevin Spacey, Denis Leary, Judy Davis, Christine Baranski. Probably one of the funniest movies ever made, and a complete cult classic. If you've only seen it on cable with the cuss words bleeped, still need to get it, not the same without the cussing!

6. How fun! Don't forget TV!
TV is best on DVD, in my opinion. No nasty commercials to get in the way.

Try Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- some of the best TV *ever* IMO, and seven season's worth will really occupy you. It's really addictive, intelligent, funny, and action oriented. Not terribly violent. Or, relive the golden days of the X-Files, many of the Star Trek series, etc.

8. I wouldn't support Netflix...
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 01:36 PM by youspeakmylanguage
They have spent a bulk of their advertising budget on advertising with companies that produce pop-ups and, I've heard in some instances, spyware. Everytime I've had their logo pop up in my screen at work it's reinforced my decision to never do business with them.

That goes for any company that advertises with spam, pop-ups and especially spyware.

13. OK, don't support Netflix
and thanks for the info, but it won't change my decision.

I boycott Wal-Mart for what I see as very unethical and destructive business practices. I'm not going to boycott Netflix over the way they advertise, especially when you have tools to control it.

I have a pop-up blocker, security software and an e-mail spam blocker, so they can advertise however they want. I'll take control over my choices to prevent it from reaching me.

What other companies are on your boycott list?

15. Any company that send pop-ups...
Travelocity, Expedia, Netflix, a bunch of banks offering discounted second mortgage loans, and any company offering me an Xbox, digital camera, iPod, or free screesaver for signing up friends to receive direct marketing.

So you don't consider using pop-ups and spyware to be "unethical and destructive business practices"?

Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 09:03 AM by youspeakmylanguage
...before I owned a DVD player.

I'll avoid online video rentals altogether before I support a company that uses pop-ups or spyware to advertise.

Try again.

10. I finally saw "The Incredibles" in my hotel
the other night, and I LAUGHED my ASS off.

Adult-oriented animation stuff; very trendy towards late 50s/early 60s style, and the costume designer (a cross between Edith Head and the crazy German lady from the Austin Powers movies) is the best part.

I also thought the 2nd Bridget Jones movie was hilarious. I'd heard it wasn't as good as the original, but her stay in the Thai prison was completely worth it.

Feel better, sweetie! I'm thinking of you!

32. Two Comedies: Groundhog Day and Mr. Show, the complete series
Bill Murray hands down amazing (and if you want a good whiff of Bill in an early serious role, check out The Razor's Edge!)

Mr. Show, it's four seasons and 8 DVD's but, damn, is that show HILARIOUS! Sketch show who's brilliant transitions between skits rival Monty Python. And, aside from David and Bob, it's got the voice of Sponge Bob, Tom Kenny (the skinny, nerdy guy!) in some hysterical roles. I'm so sad this show got canned by HBO, it was priceless (and also quite liberal!)

Kind of mundane at first, but then it picks up and it's great. Pitt was amazing as a gypsy fighter.

The Incredibles, I highly recommend it.

Just saw Hitch the other night, everybody was laughing their a** off at certain scenes.

Pieces of April, a movie about a girl who wants to fix Thanksgiving dinner for her family. Very touching and yet not too touchy-feely.

For good reviews and info about movies, go to http://www.rottentomatoes.com and check out their ratings.
