3. Me too!
I was in a small earthquake while in Honduras and it totally freaked me out. I would not trade tornados for earthquakes ever. Good luck to you all, you are brave souls.

6. I have been in earthquakes and hurricanes
I prefer earthquakes.

Tornadoes are way too scary for me. :scared:

Most quakes are soft... once you experience one, it makes you better prepared for more. :D

23. I prefer hurricanes!
We get a warning and generally know what to expect.

Heck, Hurricane Elena, I sat and watched the tornadoes tear through our yard, uprooting trees (it was a daytime storm).

But earthquakes, well you just don't know when they will happen or how bad they will be. :scared:

For me its the adrenaline rush of the expected storm that is exciting.

It's sort of weird, after you have been through hurricanes, the waiting on the next one is exciting. Definite adrenaline rush.

25. When I lived in Indiana
I got my fill of tornadoes.

Growing up in Virginia, I've had my share of hurricanes.

However, I remember a quake that shook the midwest -- sometime in the early 80's.

My cat ran up the stairs and hid under the bed. A friend then called yelling, "did you feel that"??

35. "Fun"? Did you say FUN??????
Northridge was a total effing nightmare! The worst part is the aftershocks -- when you have a quake as big as 6.5, you're bound to have aftershocks in the 5 range for around a YEAR. And in L.A. they usually happen AT NIGHT ... I slept with a bottle of Bushmills next to my bed for what felt like MONTHS after that thing, I'd call Suicide Prevention just to have someone to talk to, it was a psychological disaster for me. I didn't feel safe in my own home after that -- eventually I had to move, just so I wouldn't have those memories around (and to get on an upper floor ... every time my upstairs neighbor would walk across his place after the quake, I'd jump).

No, earthquakes are NOT FUN. I'd take a predicted storm of any kind (tornado, hurricane, blizzard) ANYTIME over a temblor.

9. My mother just emailed me this today (we're from Montana)

>>Four women were driving across the country. Each one was from a
>>different state: Idaho, Nebraska, Montana and California.
>>
>>Shortly after the trip began, the woman from Idaho started pulling
>>potatoes from her bag and throwing them out of the window.
>>
>>"What the heck are you doing?" demanded the Nebraskan.
>>"We have so many of these darn things in Idaho, I am just sick of
>>looking at them!"
>>
>>A moment later, the gal from Nebraska began pulling ears of corn
>>from her bag and tossing them from the window.
>>
>>"What are you doing that for?" asked the gal from Montana.
>>"We have so many of these things in Nebraska, I am just sick of
>>looking at them!"
>>
>>Inspired, the gal from Montana opened the car door and pushed the
>>Californian out.

19. 1989 was kind of scary

but not so much when it was happening as after the fact when the neighborhood all gathered in the street and someone noticed part of the Bay Bridge had collapsed. We then noticed the fires across the bay in San Francisco. Then we got scared.

That was the biggest one I'd ever been in. Most of them feel like a cat jumping on the bed or a truck going by.

Now I think I'll go check my earthquake supply kit.

22. Laugh at anything below 5-6ish
The news always interviews dopey people who call up to report that they "saw the water in the sink move." :eyes:

That 6.8 we had up here a few years ago was enough to send me scurrying, though.

They were OK pretty mild. the last one shook for a while and was a little scary. These were all in SF back in the 90's. I didn't get to experience the big one back in '89

30. I'm not a native Californian
I moved here six years ago from Vermont. Out here, everyone tells me, "Oh, I could never live out there - all that snow! Aren't you afraid to drive in it?"

It's all in what you're used to. I lived in Alabama for a year, too. Lived through two hurricanes and a couple of tornado warnings.

Earthquakes are just another fact of nature. Yeah, I find them pretty cool - it's quite a thrill to have the ground shake beneath you. Wow! I also enjoy thunderstorms and the hurricanes were incredible. The power of nature is awe-inspiring and humbling.

I don't necessarily laugh at them but I do appreciate them. They're incredible and rather cool. I enjoy the fact that nature is so much more powerful than human beings can ever be.

38. My phobic Dad's 1st visit to SoCal, 1986. He was scared of quakes
and that was one of the reasons for not coming out here in the past. He and Ma came out and I told him not to worry "we probably wont have an earthquake...". That night, as Ma & Dad were sleeping in their motel room, a loud crack, like a gunshot was heard and the whole area ROCKED, knocking poor Dad out of bed.
He called me at 2:30 AM, FREAKING OUT!
Poor guy wanted to fly back to Boston immediately.
