Favorite Foreign Language Movie
I just got back from Borders (my favorite Independent Bookstore closes early on Saturdays) and I spent a few hours browsing the future books I'll buy but only came home with 2 movies. Both of them are some of my favorite foreign languge movies: Il Postino (the Postman) and Life is Beautiful.

I adore foreign languge movies and have several in my collection. Other favorites are Europa, Europa and Amelie.

So what are your favorite foreign language movies?

3. Danton, Une Pure Formalitie (sp?), A Grave of Fireflies. Unless you allow
If you allow heavy Irish accents as foreign, The Secret of Roan Innish is great.

Also, love Spirited Away, and The Return of Martin Guierre. (again, sp?)

4. A Brief Vacation. Good Italian movie.
It's got a good liberal theme to it, too.

5. Amelie

I literally skipped with joy from the theatre after seeing it. Life is Beautiful made me WEEP like a crazy person and I do NOT cry at movies, like ever. City of God is also wonderful, and I'm sure there are many more my semi alcohol-soaked mind can't come up with at the mo'. ;)

The Nasty Girl - German

Spirited Away - anime

Danton

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari - silent German expressionist

Metropolis - German silent film

Ridicule - recent French

Can you tell I like German films? LOL! I'm enjoying anime, just don't know that much about it yet. I do like French films also, though titles are escaping me right now.

edit: Some more --

The Red, White, and Blue series from a few years ago.

Red Firecracker, Green Firecracker (chinese)
Wide Sargasso Sea
Nosferatu - first vampire film. German, 1922 (IIRC)

Eat, Drink, Man, Woman (Taiwan)

16. ACK! I missed your post!
Krzysztof Kieslowski is my favorite director, period. He was a realist with romantic weaknesses.

Why did you study Polish? BTW I spent a few years in Krakow, it was a great experience.

15. "Red" is an amazing film.
A retired judge that eavesdrops on his neighbor's phone calls and a heartbroken model that befriends him. Guess what? NO SEX!

Plus the end has the trilogy main characters all surviving a ferry accident.

All around good movies but "Red" is my favorite. Actually Irene Jacob is just fabulous...

17. Amelie, Manon of the Spring, Sex & Lucia, Jean de Floret
and just about anything with Catherine Deneuve - Belle de jour, Mayerling (I know- in English), East-West, even Place Vendome was different and enjoyable.

I like the Frenchies, but recently I've been getting into some of the Spanish films like Talk to Her and Sex and Lucia (a slow burn, but a good payoff). There's so little coming out of Hollywood these days to match the originality of the foreign flicks.
