I just wasted two hours of my life watching the movie "Sideways". |
|
WTF?? Am I missing something here? Can someone tell me how the hell this thing won awards? In my opinion, the acting was mediocre and the storyline weak. Wow, that's quite disappointing, I had hopes for it.

it sucked.
big time.
brilliant marketing. When they realized they had a depressing turkey on their hands with some actors who really work better in comedy..they decided to market it as this really funny, funny movie.
yuck. My wife and I just looked at each other and said, "what?"

I think I snickered oh, three times in the movie. The rest of the time, I just wondered when the hell it would end.
And I agree about the marketing and the comedy actors. I thought the two female leads did a better job than the males.

Sandra Oh was charming. And I also think that Paul Giamatti had his moments, especially the speech about Pinot Noir grapes, which was an obvious metaphor for his life. But overall, I have to say it was a stinker.

Sandra Oh had the perfect mix of quirky and charming. :) And I'll give it to Paul in that scene, but otherwise, I was disenchanted with his character in general.

16. It reminds me of that Demi Moore bomb "Striptease" |
|
When the trailers were running for the theatrical release it was billed as a drama. When they were packaging the trailers for DVDand VHS it became a comedy. It was actually neither and that was the problem. Neither the scriptwriter or the director knew what kinda movie they were making.

I probably snickered as much as Blondie (I remember 3 times).
They weren't funny - so it sucked as a comedy. The characters weren't appealing, so I didn't feel anything for them - so it sucked as a character development.
I hit stop on the DVD and thought - what exactly was that?

Why should I care what anyone else thinks? I enjoy it and that's what matters. As such, I refuse to "defend" any piece of art, whether it be film, music or visual art, that other people don't enjoy.
That is my newly adopted policy.

I loved it. I had the complete opposite reaction from you. The acting was brilliant (except one scene with Thomas Hayden Church), the script was alive and strong. I thought Paul Giamatti deserved an Oscar over Jamie Fox. What can I say?

I think it "caught on" with some people because it was NOT a high concept, violent, mindless film. I'm a big fan of LOTR, but the special effects supported a real story. Too many of today's films just have the effects.
As a Zinfandel drinker, "Sideways" might not be for me,

I didn't think it was as fantastic as I'd heard. I really did like the character development though. I have always liked Sandra Oh, and really loved her in this role. The only character I really didn't like was Jack. I didn't feel they did a good job of making him sympathetic in spite of his obvious flaws. I hated him throughout the movie, thought he was a total heel, and his little moment of tears was not enough to redeem him.
I really enjoyed Miles, and the relationship between him and Maya.

I didn't love Adaptation, though. I just thought it was a clever idea. But I like Nicholas Cage, and I probably liked the film mostly because of him. If I didn't like him, I doubt I'd have liked the film. So I can see where you're coming from.
Feel lucky, though. At least you only had to suffer two hours. I lost over ten hours with LOTR! Well, there were some effects worth watching, so maybe I only hated eight hours of it.
