I just wasted two hours of my life watching the movie "Sideways".
WTF?? Am I missing something here? Can someone tell me how the hell this thing won awards? In my opinion, the acting was mediocre and the storyline weak. Wow, that's quite disappointing, I had hopes for it.

1. no you're right
it sucked.

big time.

brilliant marketing.
When they realized they had a depressing
turkey on their hands with some
actors who really work better in
comedy..they decided to market it as
this really funny, funny movie.

yuck. My wife and I just looked at
each other and said, "what?"

6. Thank goodness I'm not alone!
I think I snickered oh, three times in the movie. The rest of the time, I just wondered when the hell it would end.

And I agree about the marketing and the comedy actors. I thought the two female leads did a better job than the males.

13. I agree about the female leads
Sandra Oh was charming. And I also think that Paul Giamatti had his moments, especially the speech about Pinot Noir grapes, which was an obvious metaphor for his life. But overall, I have to say it was a stinker.

21. I agree.
Sandra Oh had the perfect mix of quirky and charming. :) And I'll give it to Paul in that scene, but otherwise, I was disenchanted with his character in general.

16. It reminds me of that Demi Moore bomb "Striptease"
When the trailers were running for the theatrical release it was billed as a drama. When they were packaging the trailers for DVDand VHS it became a comedy. It was actually neither and that was the problem. Neither the scriptwriter or the director knew what kinda movie they were making.

60. And the thing is, 'Striptease' is one of Carl Hiaasen's best novels
IMO.

I've never been able to watch more than 5 minutes of it. The movie SO did not match my own imagination of the characters or story.

62. what's a guy thing? Sideways? Hardly.
I probably snickered as much as Blondie (I remember 3 times).

They weren't funny - so it sucked as a comedy.
The characters weren't appealing, so I didn't feel anything for them - so it sucked as a character development.

I hit stop on the DVD and thought - what exactly was that?

its a movie with a weak storyline and mediocre acting. Hell everyone ranted and raved about "The English Patient" and I thought that was one of the most mind numbingly boring movies I ever saw and it won best picture.

17. I would be one of those people, but I recently adopted a new policy
Why should I care what anyone else thinks? I enjoy it and that's what matters. As such, I refuse to "defend" any piece of art, whether it be film, music or visual art, that other people don't enjoy.

That is my newly adopted policy.

22. Me I love all movies from the greatest works of cinematic art to the
worst piece of junk made. Don't get me wrong there are some movies that even I think that the directors and scriptwriters should be burned at the stake for. Though some bad movies are so bad that they have a sense of grandeur to their awfulness. :P

27. I don't LOVE all movies, but I certainly RESPECT them.
I know there is a great deal of time, effort, and hard work put into making a film. In that light, each film deserves respect, but not automatic admiration.

14. Well, no one can tell you what you should like
I loved it. I had the complete opposite reaction from you. The acting was brilliant (except one scene with Thomas Hayden Church), the script was alive and strong. I thought Paul Giamatti deserved an Oscar over Jamie Fox. What can I say?

I can't swear you're missing anything. Not all stories and characters connect with everyone. It connected with me, though.

I think it "caught on" with some people because it was NOT a high concept, violent, mindless film. I'm a big fan of LOTR, but the special effects supported a real story. Too many of today's films just have the effects.

As a Zinfandel drinker, "Sideways" might not be for me,

67. I enjoyed it, but
I didn't think it was as fantastic as I'd heard. I really did like the character development though. I have always liked Sandra Oh, and really loved her in this role. The only character I really didn't like was Jack. I didn't feel they did a good job of making him sympathetic in spite of his obvious flaws. I hated him throughout the movie, thought he was a total heel, and his little moment of tears was not enough to redeem him.

I really enjoyed Miles, and the relationship between him and Maya.

I don't like Nicolas Cage at the best of times, so it was torture to see TWO of him in this bizarre film.

70. Great. I liked that one, too. LOL And I hated Lord of the Rings
so I'm just out of step with the world.

I didn't love Adaptation, though. I just thought it was a clever idea. But I like Nicholas Cage, and I probably liked the film mostly because of him. If I didn't like him, I doubt I'd have liked the film. So I can see where you're coming from.

Feel lucky, though. At least you only had to suffer two hours. I lost over ten hours with LOTR! Well, there were some effects worth watching, so maybe I only hated eight hours of it.
