Doctors 'find dead foetus in boy'

Doctors in Bangladesh say they have removed a long-dead foetus from the abdomen of a teenage boy who was complaining of stomach pains.
They said the foetus would have become the boy's twin had it grown normally in their mother's womb.

They said it was a case of an extremely rare condition where two foetuses are conceived as conjoined twins but one absorbs the other.

In 2003 Kazakhstan doctors removed a foetus from a seven-year-old boy.

Limbs developed

Sixteen-year-old Abu Raihan was admitted to the Bangabandhu Medical University hospital in the capital, Dhaka on Saturday.

"After the operation we found a dead foetus weighing two kilograms (4.5lbs) in his abdomen," Doctor MA Mazid said, the AFP news agency reports.

"Apart from the head, all other limbs of the baby were developed."

The condition is known as "foetus in foeto", or inclusion twin.

5. What do Jeb! Bush and Bill Frist have to say?
Could the fetus have been saved back in 1989? Why didn't the boy's mother call 9-1-1? Being in India hardly seems like an excuse to me! Err on the side of life! Err on the side of life!

9. It's not that rare, according to some...

Why, just last week, I read how this condition is called "Chimerism", and is evidently suffered by former Cycling Great (now disgraced and Banned) Tyler Hamilton.

Yep, the reason they found somebody else's corpsuckles floating around in ol' Tyler is that he absorbed his "twin" in Utero, and they got some of his "twin"s red cells mixed in with him....

10. The Discovery Channel...
did a special on this -- they featured a young boy from one of the "stan" countries who was carrying his own twin. Incredibly freaky stuff.

13. I saw that special, my husband likes to watch that kind of stuff...
we've seen all of them, the flesh eating special, the boy whose skin fell off, I mean all of them. Not MY choice, but hey, gotta let the men have the remote sometimes or they go into the DT's!

23. I'm the same way as your hubbie!
The wilder the better! :) I am always fascinated by the diversity of human experience and the oddities the human body is capable of.

The 600 pound tumor, the kid with the facial tumors, the kid whose skin grew too much -- I'll watch it all.

"The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off" was really amazing. I had no idea how old he was -- I assumed by the title and the way he spoke he was just a teen. But then I saw him talking about looking down that actress' blouse and wondered what was going on. ;) Quite an amazing spirit, that man had.

27. How would you ever get over something like that happening to you?
The experience of carrying around your dead twin for years have men go through the agony of having your twin removed from your own body. I can't even begin to imagine the devastation and the agony.

14. I know this is just a natural occurence
But it makes me feel a little queasy. I keep thinking of that scene in the classic B-movie Total Recall, with the guy who has a face growing out of his stomach.

Anyways, I hope this kid recovers from the surgery and goes on to live a full and healthy life.

16. The second case in three years in that part of the world!
In April, 2003, doctors at Chimkent Children's Hospital in Kazakhstan discovered the dead foetus of a twin brother when operating on a seven-year-old boy. The foetus had developed into a tumour but was found to have hair, nails and bones.
I saw a TV show about this case--there was worry that the tumor had also turned cancerous, which would have meant certain death for the boy. The show also featured a couple in the US.

19. Same thing happened to me!
My twin stopped developing at some point and was absorbed inside of my abdomen.... when I was 27, it began to grow and wrap itself around my uterus and ovaries -- I had a total hysterectomy as a result. My "twin" was 2.5 lbs of hair, bones and teeth -- bizarre to say the least, but as I learned, it is not at all an uncommon occurence.

And my mother went on to have another set of twins!
