1. I have one that is five years also.
Haven't done anything to upgrade it, but I have thought of adding additional ram. Only has 64M of ram, but not sure if adding any will make much different. As long as it runs ok, i'll probably stay with what I have (Win 98SE).

Do you have the celeron processor?

2. upgrade windows or hardware?
to upgrade to winxp a minimum of 128mg of ram is recommended but I would recommend more than that for xp, tho.

look on the HP site for what hardware upgrades you can do to your model.

Compare the cost to a new model.

5. Dig around HP/Compaqs site first to make sure they have XP drivers
for all your hardware. When I did mine they didn't have any of the graphics drivers, keyboard button thingys (no loss there), on-screen display, and (the killer) no modem drivers.
