just got offered a job with a large corporation
last Thursday. The hiring manager said that they would send me an offer letter on Monday and requested my Social Security Number. I emailed to firm up the salary and she hasn't responded to it yet, and no offer letter has come. I know it's only tuesday, am I freaking myself out needlessly? What was the SSN request for?

4. They asked for the number before he/she accepted the job.
They asked before they forwarded a job offer. Sounds like a credit check to me, but seems like they should have told you about the check first.

Maybe some HR people can chime in here.

3. Could be doing a credit check. Lots of employers do these days.
I work for a mega-conglomerate, but I don't ever remember giving them my social security number until after I had accepted.

Give them a day or two. The job process always takes longer than you anticipate.

5. It's summer, lot's of HR people on vacation
If the verbal offer was solid, they're probably just slow. If the verbal offer was more of a "We'll probably offer you the job," you might worry a little. Call them Wednesday after lunch.

6. I was thinking the credit thing too...
Come to think of it, I'll be making financial decisions for them, so it makes sense. Don't think there's much to worry about there though, so I need to be patient. They did confirm a start date in that conversation as well. I'm just suffering from the heebie geebies becuase I gave notice at my current place, and they have made the promotional offers to those who will fill in behind me. Dumb move? You bet! I'm just so excited about this one - it's my little career opportunity of a lifetime!! Oooooh the butterflies!

7. In that case, hang tight until tomorrow afternoon as suggested by
previous poster.

If nothing by lunch, call them after lunch and "touch base."

9. Time moves V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y for the unemployed
you're fine...been there done that. They've got a lot going on, you don't. Therefore, time stands still.

11. Thanks Jack,
That's the damn truth!!! I'm employed and the time is still passing like molasses in winter while I wait for this. I'll check in tomorrow too, that is a good idea.
Great advice and reassurance, all!!! This is my first visit to the lounge!

10. Wow, thanks for the reassurance!
Y'all are so nice! I got laid off last year from a great job, took another that turned out to be a stroll through a mid 60's republican time warp. Only the men 'did lunch', and my supe told the owner that he 'doesn't like strong willed women'. It was crazy, and I am so grateful that this new one has chosen to hire me! The conservative mindset will soon be behind me! Wooohooo
I offer my best wishes to anyone else who doesn't think that they can do it. It CAN happen. Let's hope mine does. Patience...patience....
