Is it possible to ever have enough music? Or even too much?
Part of why I love my job is the fact that I get so much music for free. Today, for instance, I have already gotten 40 CDs, including the new Ry Cooder, a Violent Femmes best of, a 2-disc Ellington retrospective, an advance of the new Wynton Marsalis, the new Anthony Hamilton... I would really miss this if I were to leave this job.

But...we have 10,000 CDs (or more) at home. It would take 68 years of constant listening to get through all that.

So...how much music is enough?

3. not possible
though I suppose it is, in theory, if much of the collection is crap that's never listened to. But aside from that, one can NEVER have too much music!!!!

4. I'm extremely envious.
I rue the fact that I sold off generous chunks of my CD collection over the years. I may have to start replenishing.

19. Thank you!
I could use some new music. My CD collection is pitifully small. I get in the music stores and become completely overwhelmed.

9. 10,000? Dang!
Killer hauls, sounds like!

I buy lots of vinyl at thrifts and garage sales etc., cheap way to add to the music library (that and I love the sound of good vinyl...more organic). Just scored some neat records at Goodwill last night, including Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert and Al Di Meola's Tour De Force Live. Got Steve Howe's solo record Beginnings, too.

Music can cure what ails ya! :D

Todd in Beerbratistan, stayin' in tune ;)

...is it worth staying in a job that may or may not be good for you primarily because you could never afford to acquire all this great music if it wasn't being given to you... Dig?

I only have a couple hundred cds, but I'm always getting more.

Edit - answering the real question: if your job doesn't make you happy, no amount of free swag in the world will salve the wound.

16. I'll be the heretic
and say, yes, it is possible to have too much.

somewhere along the way it would get to where you had music that you never listened to, and if you don't listen, what's the point really?

Of course, if you ever start your own radio station, then it all becomes worth having, because you would get a number of different DJs going through the collection and finding different things according to their individual tastes to play, so having as expansive a collection as possible makes for a better station.

That's what I as a listener enjoy; hearing something really good that I've never heard, or an old favorite that is buried deep within my memory and forgotten until heard again. :loveya:

28. Getting CD's for free is great, isn't it?
When I was in bands we used to hand out our cassettes (man, THAT makes me fel old...)to just about anybody who wanted them; we figured that the word of mouth coming from those people would more than make up for whatever nominal money we lost by not selling them.

Now that I'm on the other side of the fence, the CD's that have been sent to me (a number of them by our fellow DUers)has opened me up to some great music I would have never of heard otherwise, and it's a blast playing them on my station..

If you deeply and truly enjoy enough music to keep 10,000 CD's around, then good for you.

I've been listening to the same 10 or so CD's for the past 6 or 7 years - 5 CD's by Morphine, 1 by A Perfect Circle, 1 by Twinemen, and three by DJ Tiesto. Plus one song ("Piledriver" by Amoebassassin) from a Paul Oakenfold mix CD.

Last year was a doozy - I bought 3 new CD's that I still enjoy, 2 by Tiesto and 1 by Twinemen. I buy about 4-5 CD's a year and end up listening to maybe one of them for more than a month.

When people tell me you can fit 5,000 songs on an iPod, my first question is, "Why the hell would you want to carry around 5,000 songs?"
