Whether you like Tom Cruise or not - Go see "War Of The Worlds" |
|
HOLY FUCKING SHIT.
Okay, I don't consider myself a movie 'expert' per say, but I know what I like and it takes a really good movie to make me go "WOW!" This movie was one of those times. My aunt and I went to a new local theatre (holy shit this place is amazing!!! the seats are awesome, huge ass screens, and AMAZING sound).
All I can say is DAMN. Seriously. Even if you don't normally like Tom Cruise, I have to say, his acting was very impressive. For those of you that say he just plays Tom Cruise in his movies - I'd like for you to try to say that about this one.
As for Dakota Fanning - WOW. She is AMAZING and definitely stole the movie.
As for the special effects - Not cheesy in the least. Some of the time, I just kept thinking "How the fuck did they manage that??".
It's really hard for me to get excited about movies (especially after I've heard both negative and positive feedback), but this is a movie that I'd recommend to every single one of my friends and everyone here at DU. I'm serious - GO SEE IT SOON!

1. Is it ok if I dont like him but enjoy some of his movies |
|
Like I totally identified with Hoffman in Rainman and when I was gambling at the Casino at after grad, 1970 Baltimore Orioles, and I was kicking ass, they tried to take advantage of me because I was good but hey I got a free alarm clock of it. I wanna see War of the Worlds even if I thikn Cruise is a bit out there.

17. Daniel Day Lewis is a prime example of my Hypothesis. |
|
I believe he literally becomes the character he play. Bill Cutter in "Gangs of New York" came to life in Daniel. I think that making the transformation takes so much out of him that he only does a few roles here and there.

5. I heard some interesting commentary on it this morning |
|
Basically, that it's even darker than it was intended to be, and ends up coming across to some people as 'there is no hope for humanity, period'.... I may not go see it, but I'll watch it when it comes out!

But when you're facing a war of the worlds, why wouldn't it be dark? :) I hope you change your mind and go see it - the sound is awesome in the theatre!

|
My grandpa had a brand-new color TV, very large, and with decent sound for the time. I had nightmares for weeks and Martians under my bed for another couple of months after that.
I have high hopes for this one. Thanks for the recommendation - I'll let you know what I thought! :hi:

big time hollywood stuff without doubt, i grew weary of the 'terrorist' references, "do i go support taking them down do i not" & such = "release me so that can do so", wall of victims...but then it has all become part of our collective national consciousness: :patriot: the aliens were a bunch of ignoble pricks i must say  had other problems with it but heh...it's all good

I personally didn't think that he was saying "Release me so I can go fight the big bad terrorists". I just don't think it's fair to label this as a 9/11 explotation like some people are making it out to be. There was the one reference to terrorists in the beginning, and none that I knew of after that. I think that it was a simply alien vs. man movie.

30. no, that's not exactly my thought there... |
|
there were two, dakota uttered one but wasn't all that audible, but then it was on to the intractable foe (terrorist or no); it's just that spielberg will & does pull from every shred on his palette when he ventures forth, that being said as i mentioned, i suppose it makes sense after all.
but i recognized portions of every disaster movie ever made including several from his own i.e. a re-introduction of the hunting, intelligent raptor sequence though clocked in alien, anaconda garb etc, etc; a dash of 'the poseidon adventure', tipping ferry & such, few but for steven would cast the landscape with the most diffuse piles of twisted lives & mangles wreckage & still leave one intact vehicle & a drivable road upon which his protagonist can tool off on
you got'ah love him = we stayed for the whole film & appreciated it for what it was...a blockbuster of a hollywood movie

You never really know what is going to scare the bejesus out of a kid. I remember that "Invaders From Mars" scared me silly when I was about 8 or so, and I didn't get over it for a long time.
I think we'll pass on WOTW, or maybe see it on DVD later.

Frankly, I don't know how this movie got by with a PG-13 rating. It's much too violent and intense for children.

My son's seen lots of PG-13 movies, but it sounds like this would be the kind that would upset him. The ratings alone are really not enough to let you know what's in there.
Alien movies scared me when I was a kid, although I loved them and still do. I have a feeling my son would be sleeping with us for a month if he saw this!

45. Kooky Cruise is irrelevant here |
|
The real problem is the soulless Spielberg wreaking havoc on the classic H.G. Wells story with overwrought special effects, noise, and explosions. It has "overhyped blockbuster" written all over it. It is the same reason I avoided "Independence Day", "Armageddon", and other plastic roller-coaster tripe.
It may be okay for all I know, but I am willing to trust my instincts on this one, and pass it up. As with other Hit Blockbusters, I am sure I will not regret it.

50. You're comparing Spielberg to hacks like Devlin and Emmerich? |
|
Frankly, I'm a bit tired of people blaming Spielberg and Lucas for "destroying" movies; the auteurs of the 70s--Coppola, Friedkin, Bogdanvich--have nothing but their own egos to blame for having fizzled out. (Did Spielberg force Friedkin to make "The Sorceror?")
"Jaws" and "Star Wars" are as precious as "The Godfather" and "Chinatown." And this is coming from a guy who grew up on a diet of Bergman, Scorsese and Hitchcock.

47. It is a very frightening movie |
|
It creates a sense of helplessness in the presence of an overwhelming power bent on total annihilation.
The special effects are remarkable, and it portrays an unsettling vision of what a widespread breakdown in social order could look like.
It is a dark movie and not for everyone; I don't know if I would term it as "entertainment". But it is powerful, and there are scenes that will make you jump out of your seat.
