Chainsaw still won't start

It's a McCulloch MAC140.

I've cleaned the air filter. It was on the left side under the black plastic thing behind the rope pull. I still can't find the gas filter. The spark plug appears to be fine.

It runs for about 5 seconds at a time then stalls. It puts out oily grey smoke. The table where I'm working on it is covered in black oil.

I've tried every carb adjustment I can think of from locked down tight to backed off eight turns.

1. Gas filter

Look inside the gas tank for a plastic tube. It might be tucked in where you don't immediately see it.

Usually the gas filter is at the end of that tube. You might need to use some needlenose pliers to pull the tube out to get to the filter.

Also, what fuel mix ratio are you using? Is it an old mix?

And did you replace the fuel? Jellied gas comes to mind.

Replaced all the gas and I've burned through a tank-ful trying to get it going.
