Another good reason to see "War of the Worlds"
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 11:03 PM by UdoKier
Fox "News" ran this hit piece on the film, which was released by Paramount & Dreamworks.

War of the Worlds' Gets So-So Reviews

Paramount Pictures is hoping it won't need anti-depressants this evening — and not because Tom Cruise thinks they're bad for your health.

"War of the Worlds," the Cruise/Steven Spielberg event film, opens today with a lot on the line — such as about $182 million spent on production and a separate, whopping promotional and travel budget.

There's no fear that "War" won't open big and at No. 1. Its only competition isn't much: "Batman Begins" and "Bewitched."

In other words, a horror film from the '50s is doing battle with two TV shows from the '60s. It's more like a skirmish of the worlds.

But Paramount has a bigger problem this morning: very mixed to poor reviews, and no pre-sold-out shows in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles, according to Moviefone.com.

First of all, it's a weekday opening, second of all - does anyone doubt that if this film had been released by Murdoch's 20th Century Fox, they would have given it a ravingly positive article? Talk about your CONFLICTS OF INTEREST!!!

Go see this one (I saw it, it's awesome) because Fox "News" wants you not to.

BTW - on Rotten Tomatoes, the reviews are overwhelmingly POSITIVE.

1. It will never make it's budget back.
The goal of a film release used to be that you get half of your budget on opening weekend. That can't happen anymore.

I refuse to see anything with someone in it who is telling me what to do with my body. I don't care if he is a dem. He be crazy.

Plus, Friedman is the only person working for FOX that I enjoy.

2. Good grief.
It's a movie and he's a fucking actor. I'd care if he's a member of my family or something, but seriously, who gives a shit?? He's an actor and more than likely, you'll never meet him in life.

Don't go see the movie - with an attitude like that, you won't enjoy it.

That's just a travesty to those of us who make our livings as film reviewers!

7. I just don't like Studio films.
The last good movie I saw was "The Dangerous Thread of Things" by Wong Kar Wai.

So shoot me. I am a film snob.:P

my friend, perhaps it's time for some re-education. Don't worry, there's no shame, come along now - You need to stand up to your assigned principles, and if Tom Cruise is in a film - even if it's your own life story directed by a zombie Kubrick - you SHALL not go see that Cruise movie.

It is written in the scripture.

Thou shalt not lend thine penny to Tom Cruise - for thou shalt be cast into the pit of castaways and trolls

8. Try to remember -- "its" is possessive; or "belonging to..."
"It's" is a contraction of "it is" -- if you can't say "it is" and have it make sense, that you are using the WRONG ONE!

11. Sannum, I think it's the most frequent misspelling mistake in the
English language because it totally breaks the possessive rule! So, don't feel bad.

Raggedy Ann and Andy scare you? Hm-m-m, I've never heard THAT before.

How about THESE people? (That's ME at age 17, co-hosting a Miami children's show!) They're REALLY scary, right?

10. We should all go see it
I'm no big Tom Cruise fan but he had the nerve to bust the
pharmaceutical industry in the chops. Corporate America and
their News Stooges all fall in line & start beating up Cruise
big time. They are picking at him unmercifully and I'm sure
the drug industry is out for blood, after all, each and every
child should be on Ritalin and all adults on Zoloft or Prozac and
who the hell is Cruise to question the use of these meds.

13. Hell, I don't like Scientology. Nor am I a Cruise fan.
But that didn't diminish what is a helluva thrill ride of a movie.

17. No thanks. Looks terrible.
The fans reactions have been "oh, the ending is really cheesy and there's tons of plot holes, but the special effects are so awesome! Oh my god, I can't believe how cool all those special effects were! You have to see it in a proper theater to fully appreciate how good this movies special effects were!"

To quote Quentin Tarantino on CGI effects: "If I wanted to watch all that computer shit, I'd stay at home and fuck my playstation."

20. I can't do it.
It's interesting that there is such a focus on buying Blue at DU. And I actually do my best in that regard, though I know it's not up to the standards of some. Anyway, I can't support a movie which stars someone who I feel is acting incredibly irresponsible (to be kind) in regard to people living with mental illness. I'm not expecting anyone else to join me, and I'm not starting a campaign to boycott the guy's movies. But, for myself, I just can't lay my money down. And I am bummed about it, too. I owned a tape of the original radio broadcast as a kid. I love this stuff! But, oh well. At the end of the day, avoiding the movie is what I've got to do -- Fox's stupidity or not.

Salud.

21. I'm not gonna see it.
Not because I despise Scientology and despise Tom Cruise (although I do, on both counts), but because I just fuckin' hate special effects movies. I'm sick to death of "blockbusters" and big-budget tripe.

I wouldn't care if Howard Dean and the ghost of John Lennon were the stars of this one. I see the name "Speilberg" associated in any way with a film, and I turn tail and run as fast as I can to the nearest Wes Anderson movie.
