Do you ever notice how quick to judge people we are? |
|
In all honesty, it's pretty fucking hypocritical. We claim to be so accepting of other people's views and beliefs, yet we're the first ones to judge when someone's ideas don't match out own. And I'm not saying all of DU does it, but there are a huge number of people that claim to be so fucking open, but God forbid anyone have a disagreeing opinion with you. God forbid we respect other people's opinions whether it's about religion or something else. No wonder why we're not winning right now, we're attacking people on OUR FUCKING SIDE. I don't expect everyone to agree with everything on anything, but can't you have the fucking decency to respect someone for who they are????

Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 10:54 PM by Hardhead
I don't judge you for being judgemental. The simple truth is that we must all make value judgements as we navigate this world. Some of them are harsh, and some of them are not harsh enough. Everyone we interact with is judged on multiple levels every time we interact with them. And many are found wanting. Sad but true.

I believe people get a little crazy at times and say things to people online on DU that they would never say to someone's face. However, if they type it, that means that they likely think it. Political affiliation means nothing when it comes to ignorance, this is prevalent on all sides of the political spectrum.

and I am not sure it should not be. Should we respect bigots? Racists? Misogynists? The wilfully ignorant? Those who argue with ad hominem vitriol? I don't think so, unless they have shown they deserve it in other respects, say by being good neighbors, or by showing better informed or more reasonable opinions on other issues. That is something newbies have not yet earned. Still I prefer to argue, or discuss, the ideas, more than the person holding the ideas. I prefer to combat ignorance and hatred with reason, logic, and information. Also, I see a lot of DUers who favorably impress me with their passion and their knowledge and their compassion. We are not all knee-jerk bashers, not by a long shot. The glass is more than half-full, although not perfectly full.

Because it is, in an ironic way. Your post was very quick to judge that I had responded in a hostile manner to you. You seem to be shouting at me and throwing the f-bomb. You stated in your OP that we should respect other people, and their opinions instead of being quick to attack them. Yet you responded to me with a quick attack which is hard for me to see as respectful. Because I do not know you that well, I am not sure if this is meant to be a joke, since we are in the lounge or if you accidentally created an egregious example of the very thing you were complaining about. I also would ask where did you get the idea that I had the idea that you think this stuff is wrong? To your question of "Where are you getting the idea that I think this stuff is wrong???" Did I say you thought that stuff was wrong? I do not believe I did. I said something more like "We, as progressive minded people, are intolerant of bigots, but I, like yourself, prefer to attack the ideas rather than the people holding the ideas." Some of the harsher attacks I see, personally on DU, come from misinterpretations of what I said.

17. Its just Human Nature |
|
Blondiek143...you are perfectly correct. One of the most horrible traits we human beings have is our own inhumanity towards others who are different than us.
This is true of any culture or race...but because it is true, does not mean that it is excusable. In fact since most of us on this board, are well educated, and living well off (particularly in comparison to many people in third world contries): it is particularly shameful behavior upon our own part. We should know better, and show a greater degree of tolerance and empathy towards differences than the Conservatives.
Being Liberal Minded in the classical sense is what makes us different and superior towards our ignorant brethren who control Congress and the White House.

I don't buy the conventional wisdom that it is a bad thing. I use it to my advantage, often. I am not sure where this idea came from that we must be all-embracing and lovey-dovey of others' world views. When it comes to fascism, for example, I am pretty damn intolerant, and yes, intellectually arrogant when striking it down.

And I never said "embracing and accepting makes one less of a human being". Nowhere at all did I say that.
I cannot debate this point with someone who ascribes opinions to me I do not have.
The old adage goes, "Be open-minded, but no open-minded that your brains fall out." I do not think that is a bad way to 'choose to live my life'.
I tend to think creative, independent thinkers are the most beautiful, and courageous people. I do not want to surround myself with clones of the same opinion. How dull!

|
The way emotions have been heated over him as of late, and the timing of the new movie he is in, it should be known by anyone who brings him up that flames will fly, and opinions will be trounced upon, right or wrong.
When a person brings up a heated topic in the Lounge, they should NOT expect delicacy or diplomacy to be the ruling ethos (it would be nice, but long-time observers know better). Cruise is, for whatever reason, the Hot Topic du jour, and should be brought up at one's peril. :-)

But it's not just about him. You know, you're not the only one that's been here for awhile. I lurked for a long time before I joined. I may be young, but I'm, in no means, stupid. If you have been a long-time observer, you would be one of the first ones to realize the truth in what I'm saying. But maybe it's acceptable behavior to you. Maybe it's okay in your mind for others to judge people before they even know them. However, that bullshit is not okay with me, and I'm not afraid to say it. Tom Cruise is a celebrity. A celebrity I'll never encounter and I'll never care what he says. This is about something bigger and I'm sorry you can't understand that.

That many people who are supposedly liberal/progressive/whatever would easily resort to the kind of "us vs. them" mob justice that freepers use if it came down to it. I guess I thought people here understood the whole "working for a greater good" concept but in many cases I was wrong. It was eye-opening.

Lack of respect for the capacities of others and the dehumanization of others.

How large a section of the electorate can we afford to continue to dismiss?
