Visiting Philadelphia next week
Any DUers want to show us the ropes?

The purpose is a feasibility study to determine whether we should move there, and if so, where. I'm particularly interested in things like where the good live music is, whether there are funky old movie theatres that show classics and/or art films, ethnic restaurants and/or bodegas, pleasant walking neighborhoods, and anything else that's curious or fun.

And I really want to meet the Suburban Guerrilla. Atrios would be nice too.

Thanks!

1. Mutter museum
Weird place located at the college of physicians.

Check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art for jazz performances on Friday nights.

4. Yay!
I'm arriving tomorrow and I'll stay through Friday. Mrs. Squeech is there already, in a "business hotel" on the Jersey side of the Walt Whitman bridge.

The things I think I want to do so far are: see bbernardini's band, the New Kings of Rhythm, on Saturday night at NXNW in Germantown, and attend Drinking Liberally on Tuesday.

And I would love to meet for dinner!

6. Also would like to recommend "Geechee Girl"

It's on the same street (Germantown) as NXNW, on the 5900 block. Excellent food, funky atmosphere.

You do know you're coming here during The Perfect Storm of traffic and crowd mayhem, right --- Live8 combined with all the "Welcome Amercia" July4th madness, right? And you won't hold it against us, right?

8. Sigh
Yeah. The timing had to do with Mrs. Squeech's school schedule-- this was her last chance to take time off before winter. But it was, shall we say, less than optimal.

5. Can't introduce you to Atrios...
But can answer some of your other needs.

Most of Center City south of Market Street to South Street, and between the rivers is a pleasant walking neighborhood. My favorite places to walk are on Delancy Place/Street between 15th & 22nd, anywhere in Old City (anywhere south of Chestnut on the streets with numbers lower then 8th), and on South Street between 2nd & 7th (although weekends there get really hairy with all the mobs of kids)

As for live music, I've heard good things about The World Cafe Live in West Philadelphia (the area around Drexel and Penn), where you'll also find many of the ethnic restaurants.

You may want to browse some issues of The City Paper and Philadelphia Weekly to get a non-tourists feel for the city. Both have run articles about specific neighborhoods, and both advertise a LOT of live music.

I'm probably not the person to show you the ropes, since 1) I only work in the city (live in the 'burbs) and 2) -- I'm afraid to admit this on DU -- I don't like live music and my only ethnic restaurant experiences are in Chinatown and the many Italian places all over the city.

Also, don't assume this weather as the norm. July & August are the worst times to be here - the natives usually head to the South Jersey or Delaware shore to get away from The Soup.
