6. We had beer machines in Navy Barracks in the early 70's
Volatile mix. Young Sailors and cheap beer.

What do you do with a drunken Sailor?

8. I suppose those aren't there anymore!
My host father used to pay allowance money to his YOUNG kids to go out and buy him beer. My host brother was only 9 at the time!

9. In an effort to "deglamorize" alcohol use
the beer machines came out of the barracks and there are no longer Happy Hours at Military Clubs (at least Navy Ones) because it promoted alcohol consumption by service members. One of the results was more Sailors heading off base for liquid libation.

24. That's right Trof (At least in Navy Clubs)
The hierarchy went overboard on this social issue as it did/does on most. Today's badboy in the Navy is Hazing. Zero tolerance for it now. I was initiated into the Chief Petty Officer Community in 1989. I was hazed (trained) unmercifully for 10 weeks and loved every minute of it. And my Evals/Fitreps indicate I came out of it alright as do about 99.99% of all those who participate.

Our kids can kill and maim but they can't drink beer in their home away from home. Some of my shipmates got kinda rowdy, but never me, no not me.

7. Beer
But that was in Japan--I'm sure they offer far more unusual things in their vending machines.

Bait doesn't strike me as odd at all because I live in a rural part of the country where every convenience store seems to sell at least nightcrawlers. My favorite sign ever, that I saw years ago in Fairmont WV, said:

Open for Breakfast
Fresh Doughnuts
Nightcrawlers

16. Japan rocks
I got to go there once. In the pleasure quarters, like in Shinjuku, you could find vending machines that sold porn-- text, photos, or video. Also fresh changes of underwear, presumably for people who'd never made it home the previous night, not just overindulgers in the goods from the previously mentioned machines.

My favorites were the machines that sold Coffee Boss-- canned coffee with milk and sugar. The really useful machines would serve it warm.
