Songs that make you cry...
I have a few, and I know that Mommy does so...

For me, it's 'Georgia on my Mind' by Ray Charles, and 'Family Portrait' if it catches me of guard, by Pink.

For Mom it's 'See How We Are' by X.

1. Just one:
Silver and Gold....recorded by Joe Strummer and released posthumously.

I'm gonna go out dancin' every night
I'm gonna see all the city lights
I'll do everything silver and gold
I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna take a trip around the world
I'm gonna kiss all the pretty girls
I'll do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

Oh I do a lotta things I know is wrong
Hope I'm forgiven before I'm gone
It'll take a lotta prayers to save my soul
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna take a trip around the world
Gonna kiss all the pretty girls
Who do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna go out dancin' every night
I'm gonna see all your city lights
I'm gonna do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

4. "I never Cry" Alice Cooper
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 06:38 PM by dbonds
If there is a tear on my face
It makes me shiver to the bones
It shakes me, Babe
It's just a heartache that got in my eye
And you know I never cry, I never cry
Sometimes I drink more than I need
Until the TV's dead and gone
I may be lonely
But I'm never alone
And the night may pass me by
But I'll never cry
Take away, take away my eyes
Sometimes I'd rather be blind
Break a heart, break a heart of stone
Open it up but don't you leave it alone
'Cuz that's all I got to give you
Believe me Babe, it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin, its never been tried
And you know I'll never cry
And you know I'll never cry
And you know I'll never cry
Never cry, I'll never cry
Break a heart, break a heart of stone
'Cuz that's all I got to give you
Believe me Babe, it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin, its never been tried
And you know I'll never cry
Never cry
I'll never cry

8. Seasons of the Sun
a song from the 1970s.

And that song by a woman (1990s I think) about the little boy: "I live upstairs from you" (he's being abused and tries not to cry out). Can't think of the title, I usually change it when it comes on the radio, it's so very sad. (It's not 1,000 Maniacs, who also did a child abuse song).

21. Suzanne Vega did the song....I think it's called Luka.
Or "Just don't ask me anymore".

It makes me sad, too.

Also, the Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics. My father died shortly after that became a hit so everytime I heard it, I got choked up.

Even over "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia".

9. you're the reason god made oklahoma...
There's a full moon over Tulsa and I hope that it's shining on you
Nights are gettin' colder here in Cherokee County there's a blue norther passin' through
I remember green eyes and a rancher's daughter but remember is all that I do
Losin' you left a purty good cowboy, with nothin' to hold on to.

Sundown came and I drove to town to drink a drink or two
You're the reason God made Oklahoma, you're the reason God made Oklahoma
And I'm sure missin' you. And I'm sure missin' you.

Out here the city lights outshine the moon I was just now thinkin' of you
Sometimes when the wind blows you can see the mountains and all the way to Malibu
Everyone's a star here in L.A. county you ought to see the things that they do
All the cowboys down on the Sunset Strip, wishin' they could be like you.

Santa Monica Freeway sometimes makes a country girl blue
You're the reason God made Oklahoma, you're the reason God made Oklahoma
And I'm sure missin' you

I worked ten hours on a John Deere tractor, just thinkin' of you all day
Got a calico cat and a two-room flat on a street in West L.A.
You're the reason God made Oklahoma, you're the reason God made Oklahoma
And I'm sure missin' you. And I'm sure missin' you.

david frizzel ~

i don't about  but there is is, plus

time to say goodbye

When I'm alone I dream of the horizon and words fail me.
There is no light in a room where there is no sun
and there is no sun if you're not here with me, with me.
From every window unfurls my heart the heart that you have won.
Into me you've poured the light,
the light that you found by the side of the road.

Time to say goodbye.
Places that I've never seen or experienced with you.
Now I shall, I'll sail with you upon ships across the seas,
seas that exist no more,
it's time to say goodbye.

When you're far away I dream of the horizon and words fail me.
And of course I know that you're with me, with me.
You, my moon, you are with me.
My sun, you're here with me with me, with me, with me.

Time to say goodbye.
Places that I've never seen or experienced with you.
Now I shall, I'll sail with you upon ships across the seas,
seas that exist no more,

I'll revive them with you.
I'll go with you upon ships across the seas,
seas that exist no more,
I'll revive them with you.
I'll go with you.

You and me.

...but i'm a sucker for that stuff

Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 06:42 PM by Iris
I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking:
All the things I should have said, but I never said.
All the things we should have done, but we never did.
All the things I should have given, but I didn't.
Oh, darling, make it go,
Make it go away!

Give me these moments back.
Give them back to me.
Give me that little kiss.
Give me your hand.

15. Wind Beneath My wings
I blubber everytime I hear it.
We danced to it at the father-daughter dance at her wedding.
She whispered "Dad, that's exactly the way I feel about you. You and mom have always been there for me."
Oh my.

I wanted "Stars Fell On Alabama".
The band said they didn't know it.

25. Not at all alone.
It's a tear jerker.
A three-hanky song.
A lady I knew in Illinois a long long time ago said something that's stayed with me the rest of my life.

"I know I'm prejudiced. We can't help it. It's the way we were raised. My hope is that I don't pass my prejudices along to my kids."

Damn. That's a "hard sayin'", as we say in Alabama.
That has always been my goal.

The song "Butterfly Kisses" came out just before my wedding. I've always been very close to my dad and I was moving far away when I got married. Every time I was in the car and it came on the radio, I had to pull over because I was crying so hard.

"Where Have You Been?" by Kathy Mattea gets me every single time!

And, finally, "The Women Gather" by Sweet Honey In The Rock

30. Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 07:47 PM by Xipe Totec
I'll be damned, here comes your ghost again
but that's not unusual
it's just that the moon is full
and you happened to call

And here I sit, hand on the telephone
hearing the voice I'd known
a couple of light years ago
headed straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from
A booth in the Midwest
Ten years ago I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
they bring Diamonds and Rust

Now I see you standing with brown leaves all around and snow in
your hair
Now we're smiling out the window of the crummy hotel over
washington square
Our breath comes out white clouds, mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
we both could've died then and there

Now you're telling me you're not nostalgic
then give me another word for it
you were so good with words
and at keeping things vague

cause I need some of that vagueness now, it's all come back too
clearly
yes, I loved you dearly
and if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid

But we both know what memories can bring
they bring Diamonds and Rust
yes we both know what memories can bring
they bring Diamonds and Rust

31. Embarrassing...
but "Sailing" by Christopher Cross came out right when my dad died, and it was on all the time, so I always tear up when I hear it.

"Why" by Annie Lennox USED to, but not anymore. It was the relationship I was in at the time.

Same with "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits.

"Stones in the Road" by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Just an incredibly moving song.

And ever since I saw "Iron Jawed Angels" and heard "Will the Circle Be Unbroken..", then followed a bunch of gals up the Capitol Mall with locked arms singing it during the Pro-choice March last year, I have never been the same.

39. "I Can't Make You Love Me" - Bonnie Raitt
I Can't Make You Love Me
written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin

Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices
inside my head

Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close,
don't patronize

Don't patronize me

Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't
You can't make your heart feel
something it won't
Here in the dark
in these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And I'll feel the power
but you won't
No, you won't
Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't

I'll close my eyes
then I won't see
the love you don't feel
when you're holding me

Morning will come
and I'll do what's right
just give me till then
to give up this fight
and I will give up this fight

Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't
You can't make your heart feel
something it won't
Here in the dark
in these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And I'll feel the power
but you won't
No, you won't
Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't

42. You Needed Me - Anne Murray
Call it cheesy if you want but it still makes me misty

I cried a tear
You wiped it dry
I was confused
You cleared my mind
I sold my soul
You bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me.

Chorus
You gave me strength

To stand alone again
To face the world
Out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me
You needed me

And I can't believe it's you I can't believe it's true
I needed you and you were there
And I'll never leave, why should I leave
I'd be a fool
'Cause I've finally found someone who really cares

You held my hand
When it was cold
When I was lost
You took me home
You gave me hope
When I was at the end
And turned my lies
Back into truth again
You even called me friend

Repeat Chorus

You needed me
You needed me

48. Another Day in Paradise by Phil Collins
She calls out to the man on the street
’sir, can you help me?
It’s cold and I’ve nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me? ’

He walks on, doesn’t look back
He pretends he can’t hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh think twice, it’s another day for
You and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it’s just another day for you,
You and me in paradise

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she’s been crying
She’s got blisters on the soles of her feet
Can’t walk but she’s trying

Oh think twice...

Oh lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she’s been there
Probably been moved on from every place
’cos she didn’t fit in there

Oh think twice

52. "Is it Real?" by Steve Conte
Figurines that fall like leaves then disappear, keep calling
Is it real? Is it real?
Dark machines that wheeze and breathe then mock the air, appalling
What is real? What is real?
This world can really be too much
I can't take another day
I guess that I've just had enough
My minds slipping far away
I'm falling out of touch
Could someone please explain?

Set my mind for open sky, but couldn't fly, so sadly
What am I? What am I?
Sullen eyes shed teardrop lies then criticize, now laughing
What is real? What is real?
It's really all become too much
I'm not sure what I should feel
I guess I've finally had enough
I don't know if this is real
I'm crashing in and out of touch
Can anyone please explain?

* * *

An anthem for the depressed.

54. If I could here my Mother Pray again- Ben Harper
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 09:40 PM by BeTheChange
If I could only hear my mother pray again
How sweet and happy seem, those days of which I dream
Memory I recall now and then
And with what rapture sweet, my weary heart will beat
If I could hear my mother pray again
If I could hear her sweet, tender voice as then
How happy I would be, it would mean so much to me
If I could hear my mother pray again
Around the old home place, her patient smiling face
Was always bringing comfort, hope and cheer
And when she used to sing to her eternal king
It was the sound I loved to hear
If I could only hear my mother pray again
If I could hear her sweet, tender voice as then
How happy I would be, it would mean so much to me
If I could hear my mother pray again
She used to pray that I, on Jesus would rely
And always walked the shining gospel way
Her work on earth is done, the life crown has been won
And now she's at rest with Him above
If I could only hear my mother pray again
If I could hear her tender voice as then
How happy I would be, it would mean so much to me
If I could hear my mother pray again
If I could only hear my mother pray again

55. you'll probably flame me...
considering who it is but...

Because You Loved Me--Celine Dion

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I'll be forever thankful baby
You're the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You're the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I'm grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don't know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You've been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

It used to be an ok song; it was on my car CD and I'd leave it play if it came on. A few days after my mom's funeral it played on my CD player and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Imagine, if you will, riding down a road with this playing and me bawling like a baby. Oh and did I mention I was driving? It makes me tear up reading the lyrics. I miss my mom.

60. "You'll Be In My Heart"
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 10:09 PM by Liberalynn
Though the lyrics didn't totally fit, it came out about the same time we had to put our ten year old German Shepard to sleep because of a tumor.

I guess it makes me cry because its true that I still miss him sometimes even though he has been gone for about five years now and I have a new dog whom I love too. So he is still in my heart.

I had no idea why this song makes me cry so hard, but it does. It’s like it speaks to a part of me that I never know was there.

INTO THE WEST
Music & Lyrics by Annie Lennox, Howard Shore & Fran Walsh

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across a distant shore

Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All Souls pass

Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping

Chorus

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West

97. "Timothy" by The Buoys

Written by Rupert Holmes
Reached #17 on the U.S. charts in 1971

Trapped in a mine that had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
Were Joe and me

Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?

Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll have a swig
And then there's some for you."

Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?

I must have blacked out just around then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around
To finding Timothy
Timothy...
