Watching That's So Raven w/ my daughter. |
|
Not a very clever show but one that I don't mind my daughter watching. The title character is not an extremely skinny young woman who looks more like she wants a boy's body. She's curvy-big on top and bottom (which may be my child's fate if you look at my family). She dresses stylishly but is still covered. The show does have a racially diverse cast which I also appreciate. It doesn't deal w/ any heavy issues. Instead, it tends to go for dumb laughs for a young crowd (though one of her friends does preach environmentalism and is a vegetarian). I just appreciate a kid's show that shows a young woman who does not subscribe to the ideal of the "model's body" and proves that you do not have to dress like a tramp to look stylish (and cute).
Anyone else ever watched this show?

except that my five year old loves the show. I'm just happy that there is someone on there w/ a real body type that is normal and she looks like it is very much accepted instead of some of the other young women her age.

12. Except that the two girls on there are adorable. |

Raven is a doll. The other friend, Chelsea, is a member of the redhead club. We redheads all have to support each other!

3. I have, and I think Raven is as cute as can be |

She's actually quite beautiful, and I've made the exact same observation you have. I've watched it with my daughter and I've said Raven reminds me a bit of Lucy. I think she's quite talented.

She proves that you don't have to be 5'10", 100 lbs, blonde hair and blue eyed to be beautiful. The show itself is standard kids fare but I am very appreciative of my daughter having a good role model. She is proof that you don't have to starve yourself to fulfill your dreams (if that is a dream of yours).

4. I have't watched it myself |
|
but my husband has, with our kids, and he disliked it. Caveat-- He's VERY opinionated.
He said it made it seem that the most important thing in life was to be FAMOUS. He didn't care for the message that sends.

She wants to be famous (as do many teens) but one of her friends cares more about what she can do for her community and for the world around her. It's a message that is played out often in the show. They also play out the message that you can mess up but still depend on your family and friends-that they will always be there. It does also play up the message that you can be different and that's ok. It shows that you should never be ashamed of what gifts you may be born w/ and that they are always positive if you use them in a good way (no matter what the gift is).

A friend of mine was on an episode last year. It sure beats a lot of that "reality" crapola that's on TV now.

Like I said earlier, I'm just happy to see someone who doesn't weigh 100 lbs making other girls feel bad for not being the same as her.

13. I met Raven a few weeks ago, working on another show |
|
She was very gracious and sweet, seemed genuine, humble and intelligent. We talked for about 10 minutes -- and several people came up to her for autographs while we were talking. When they walked away, she said something to the effect of, "I'm so lucky to get to do what i do and get recognized."
Anyway, I never watch her show, but she's pretty cool in person.

You never know how child actors will act. Some are grateful for the experience while others...well, we know what happens to the others. I think she seems like she will be from the first class.

that isn't just harmless, but carries some positive messages ANFD is entertaining.
My son thinks Raven's kind of cute, too, although he won't admit it. (he's of mixed race, fwiw).

I recently turned on a friend to this show. She has two daughters who are of mixed race (white/black/hispanic). Now they watch it together all the time. She also appreciates the body image message on there.

20. I watch it with my 8-year-old and that was the first thing I noticed .. |
|
that it wasn't the same stupid show with the same stupid skinny blonde.
And the kids on the show are very intelligent.
The parents care.
I enjoy it.
(P.S. The mom on the show went back to law school; I relate, that what I've been working on since 2000. I graduated last year, and am now working on passing the Bar Exam. So, I have something in common with the 'Mom' character.)
