Why do Freeper-types so often have terrible writing skills?
It's been gnawing at me for a while now. Is it the ignorance? The laziness of not thinking for oneself?

Why is it that you can often tell a person's Freeper status based on this one element? Am I crazy? Do others see it too? Do these pants make me look fat?

1. I've met some freepers
who write very well. However, I do see from time to time that the writing skills of some freepers are a bit horrid.

so that DUer's reading their nonsense would understand that they are idiots and not to engage them in discourse lest those watching not be able to tell the difference.

7. They are self-centered and figure they know everything.
They won't bow to the intellectual or literary elite lest they surrender their precious (and sensible) outlook on life.

Such cosmetic morality aside, they will never dare muddy up the waters of their own beliefs for fear of what they would find under the surface.

10. Actually, I wouldn't generalize all FReepers
Some of them (If you browse any of the right wing boards) write very well. There is some very good (though fundamentally flawed) origional writings on FR.

But, yes, the ones that come here have horrid writing skills, if any at all.

To answer your question, therefore, I would say that the FReeper-types that can actually write are smart enough not to post here.

Of course if the thought process is flawed to begin with, well.....

I read the goofiest letter to the editor tonight.. talk about mixed metaphors, and trite phrases..

Ag News: Local And Regional News

Reader says column is biased

Dear Editor and Mr. Guebert,

Sir, your opinion "A failure to communicate."

Following a nation's track record from birth to fall as in the good of the U.S. of A reveals that spin, corruption, rumors, birth of PORK, bold-face being, finger-pointing et al are a continuing perfection.

Yet very few (on one hand) in the last 200 years have made evidence of an attempt at unbiasness. Yet the two true pulses of a (once) great nation, the Democrats and Republicans, intentionally fail to be true leaders. Ernst - while the so-called "other parties" continue to perform - whose on first? circus act.

So now we have a formidable nation who are non-voters fully contempt of national, state, county, city charades. Then we have the army of finger-pointers, who again, intentionally refuse to get an "A+" in their homework as long as their partiality can be claimed as "opinion."

Bias, prejudice, indifference, etc., are simple and complex human options - choices one makes intentionally in the absence of mature discernment.

This Capitol Hill communication thing is tantamount to both parties, hands dripping with blood, greed and yes - crap. What we truly have here is an ongoing citizen failing to communicate to any - all levels of government to clean up their act. This excuse of "write or call your elected official" is - has been a worthless ploy rendering one's "opinion" from whole milk to 1 percent as politicians are self-serving anyway.

There are still far too many who specialize in their cause in "the sky is falling" mindset. Political wannabes learn how to swallow hard in the arena of "damned if you do-damned if you don't" as the spin - opinion experts endeavors to seek self-importance by being right more often than wrong.

One can be an expert by researching Readers Digest articles and play the roulette wheel of right-wrong for a chance to be a modern Nostrodomus. Or I told you so!

Biased opinions are of the same quality found on public toilet walls. A real opinion violates the silence of saying something good about the other person rather than not say anything at all.

Or by doing some homework, the truth alters the convenience of jumping to conclusions.

Or! At the corner café, your friend looks at the new customer and remarks, "he's a smuck!" Out of the usual rational indifference, you say, "ya!" Later on you ask why and your friend says, "Gotta look at his license plate."

Or! At the federal OMB. "Well, what's this warn on global terrorism going to cost?" "Who's Rob and Peter this election?" "Well, according to so-n-so's opinion, just put in about nine or 10 zeros then when the next party takes office they will tell us where to put the commas and the decimal point."

May I conclude that mil order soap boxes being non-U.S.-made tend to reflect the mind it supports. America is being taken for a ride, and too many biased opinions are not pointing out the true locations of the squeaking wheels.

But that would involve cutting and pasting the whole letter.

A few highlights though:

Then we have the army of finger-pointers, who again, intentionally refuse to get an "A+" in their homework as long as their partiality can be claimed as "opinion."

What?

Or! At the federal OMB. "Well, what's this warn on global terrorism going to cost?" "Who's Rob and Peter this election?" "Well, according to so-n-so's opinion, just put in about nine or 10 zeros then when the next party takes office they will tell us where to put the commas and the decimal point."

27. I think his problem isn't lack of education, or being a freeper
I think he's psychologically imbalanced. It sure reads like other stuff I've read by people are a little titched in the head, and can't quite make sense out of stuff.

Freepers also, of course, are insane, but in a different way, and they tend write more illiterately, not insanely.

So this guy's prblem isn't so much whether he's repuke or democrat or freep or DUer, it's that his brain isn't firing right.

24. I've noticed a certain pride
in illiteracy. I went into a store where there was a sign that read "Smile. Your on camera." I told the clerk about the misspelling and she said, "We know it, and we aren't gonna change it," with a touch of pride in her voice. I thought, "Very well. Help keep up the stereotype that people from Arkansas are dumb hillbillies."

The sad thing is that in this rural part of the Ozarks there are ways to become educated, if you so desire. I get two different NPR stations and yet I'm looked at as a kook for listening to classical music. There is live theater in the town where I work, but most people with whom I'm in contact just talk about hunting and the high school football games.

All my life I've noticed an undercurrent of anti-intellectualism in the Midwest and South, where I have lived. It coincides with political leaning, for the most part. Democrats usually show an interest in learning, while the right-wingers I've met are the ones who are suspicious of anyone using words with more than two syllables and who insist on using complete sentences.

born of stupidity and resulting in fear of anyone or anything they see as different from themselves, thus creating the attitude of bigotry in most of them. That which we do not understand, we fear and learn to hate, if we don't try to understand.

30. I think it has to do with the Freeper's lack of emphasis on EDUCATION.
I mean it's obvious from their stance on how education funding is expendable when it comes to, well, ANYTHING else. If a school has no funding, their kids are going to end up not learning a whole lot of important things, like GRAMMAR and Writing skills. God, I go to a predominately freeper college in the middle of rural Oklahoma. These people and DOUBLE NEGATIVES make me wanna barf.

32. My take on why Freepers have terrible writing skills?
Intellectual laziness.

Most people have the capacity to learn. Most do learn, and continue to learn throughout their entire lives. However, some reach a certain plateau, and are satisfied. They settle on ideas, thought processes, spellings, and other factors of communication that are easy to remember and repeat. (Megadittoes, Rush!)

For instance, why do a greater that average number of freepers have problem with the correct versions of "Your vs. You're" and "their vs. there"? It has to do with laziness. It is much easier to type the sentence "Your a damned liberul! So Their!" than to actually try to remember the actual grammar guidelines that illustrate the correct usage for the sentence they are trying to construct. They figure that if someone needs to decipher and interpret what they are trying to communicate, it will be on the reader's end, not theirs.

Same can be said for their views on many things. It is much easier to categorize things cleanly in black and white (You're either with us or against us... Abortion is wrong in all instances... Government is bad... Taxes are bad...) than to actually think through an idea, and perhaps reach the conclusion that there is a grey area. "Dammit, it just doesn't fit my nice and neat little label!"

That is it. Laziness. It is easier not to have to think. You can make intellectually retarded statements (retarded in the inability to grow and achieve, that is)like,

"It's the foreigner's fault I can't get a job.."
"It's unpatriotic to speak against the President when we're at war!"
"Those Dixie Chicks are treasonous bitches!"

And when someone wants to engage you in a conversation, you can interpret anything that doesn't fit within your classification parameters as "a bunch of liberal bullshit."

That's my take. Basic intellectual laziness.

Hopefully, I didn't misspell anything badly, or use the incorrect version of their or there...

I just don't see how people can write like that, unless they honestly don't care that they look less than educated. I suspect it is intellectual laziness, as someone posted above. *Your pants have just the right amount of cling*
