I had it for 6 years and decided one day to shave it off. I was a bit surprised to see that I didn't look as bad as I thought I might.

I looked through the pics before looking at the posts, and picked you out! I thought to myself, "Who here looks like a poster to DU?" and yours was the only one that really stood out - the others looked like either like liberals, but not the kind to enjoy an internet chat, or repuke.
Hertz and Snyder also looked like they could be, but not as much as your picture.

that people with Ph.D.s in education, business, and humanities overwhelmingly use the "Dr." prefix, whereas physicists, engineers, mathemeticians, etc, very rarely do?
When I was an undergrad/grad student, my physics profs nearly all asked that we refer to them on a first-name basis after we were done with their class.
When I went through the MBA program, the professors rigidly demanded we call them Dr. so-and-so even after we had graduated; the only exception was my quantitative finance prof, whose educational background was closer to that of an engineer than a business degree, anyway.

Most of my colleagues insist on being called "professor" or "doctor." To answer your question- I don't know. I never noticed that trend before. All my undergrad professors expected to be called "doctor." I took many courses in sciences and social sciences.

At least that's my guess based on some personal experiences...

43. AFAIK, medical doctors always go by "Dr." |
|
My personal experience is in the physical sciences. There, using "Dr.", except in formal written communication, was pretty much verboten. A major faux pas. (How many more foreign terms can I throw in? ;-) )
I thought "Dr." was reserved for M.D.s, but apparently Ph.D.s in other fields do feel free to use the title, as TxLib pointed out.
