Why does nobody want to live in North Dakota?? |
|
Edited on Wed Jul-06-05 11:15 PM by SmileyBoy
I mean, we must have SOMETHING to attract SOME people into moving here. Our education system is top-notch, you can probably buy a 26-room mansion in South Fargo next to a golf course for under half a million bucks, the people are EXTREMELY friendly, the religious types are surprisingly tolerant, and there are basically no political extremes. Almost everyone's either a moderate Republican or a moderate Democrat. That's why a lot of stuff gets done in our legislature, because there's no partisan bickering, unlike some states (*COUGH*Minnesota*COUGH*)
And even though our average wages are lower than most other states, remember that everything is cheaper here. Gasoline, clothes, food, housing, insurance, etc. People from Canada (Winnipeg) flock down to Fargo every weekend for the cheap shopping. Yet there seems to be some huge stigma attached to this state.
Why??

You left at a good time. I would give my right testicle to be able to move to Winnipeg right now.

4 years this July. I have to thank my Canadian wife for that; if I hadn't met her, I'd still be in the US right now..

5. Fargo and Grand Forks are loaded with white-collar jobs. |
|
Fargo's largest employer is Microsoft, which is headquartered near Frontier, a Fargo Suburb. It is the 2nd largest Microsoft office in the WORLD right after Redmond, Washington. Also, a good portion of Amazon.com is headquartered in Grand Forks.
If you want a blue-collar job, the Red River Valley is TEEMING with manufacturing jobs. Our manufacturing industry has grown every year for the past 20+ years. Machinery, plastics, farm equipment, construction, you name it.
Bismarck and Minot might be a different story, though.

9. Well, if lots of people moved here, then there'd be more to do. |
|
And don't try to say that there's nothing to do in Fargo. That's a myth perpetrated by disgruntled high schoolers who do not take the initiative to go OUT and FIND things to do. There's PLENTY to do in Fargo and Grand Forks, a lot more than normal cities for their size. If a person fails to actually go out and SEEK entertainment, then that person would probably think Tokyo is boring, too.

Do you really crave a 60-90 minute commute to work? Or the pollution? I'll take the cold.

10. Hell, the commute is already over 30 minutes where I live. |
|
I used to have a job on the far south side of town, and I live on the far north side, and in rush hour, it would usually take me 35-40 minutes to get there or back.

18. Look at the house NW corner of 11th/University. |
|
I lived in the basement one yr, before that next door to the north. I think they tore that building down after I moved to the basement apt. It had been busted a yr before I lived there, had 1 search warrent for the whole building, so of course no one let the cops in their individual apartments. So the police used their axes to chop down the doors and arrest everyone. Who then got off on illegal search stuff. drugs, sex, rock&roll, back when drugs was $10 bags. Not that I ever imbibed. In drugs that is. never mind.
When do you graduate?

But I still have a few years before I graduate. I'm almost 23, and I might not get my degree until I'm 27...:(

22. Yup, I graduated there a while back. |
|
However, you could be the child of a classmate, that's how long ago the while was. The house with all the apartment doors with chopped pieces glued back in was called the GDI house (god damn independents), called one of the fringe frat/sorority houses. Hang in there with college. It can take a while. If I get back to visit my parent still living in Fgo) I'll let you know.

beats South Florida. No offense to the people who love South Florida, but I made a huge mistake moving down here in late '97. I would love to live around some wide open spaces again.

I'm telling you, if I ever leave Texas, it ain't for North Dakota. It'll be to live in New York, or Philly, or London or maybe even Chicago.
