Poll question: Worst TV series spinoff
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 03:05 AM by undisclosedlocation
Not sure the ones where the network tried to keep a series that had run its course alive anyway really count (After MASH, Three's A Crowd, Mayberry RFD), but what the hell. Trot out some other suggestions and I'll take those three off (assuming they don't have any votes by that time)

Also worthy of mention (or ridicule, as the case may be):
Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Vincent D'Onofrio acting creepy again
Good Times (not a bad show, but a spinoff of a spinoff)
Trapper John, MD (A: a spinoff 20 years later; B: Stupid title as he was already an MD; C: An actor who fell off the face of the Earth after leaving a hit show to become a star takes over the role from another actor who fell off the face of the Earth after leaving a hit show to become a star)
Millennium
The Facts of Life

I'll try to be back within the hour to make changes, including adding Other.

1. I haven't watched a single episode of Joey...
...but that's primarily because I can't take another second of Drea DeMatteo.

2. I don't think I ever watched any of these except for Phyllis and Mayberry
but perhaps memory draws a merciful curtain.

12. She's so unlikeable.
Sue me, but I liked Friends. I really tried to watch Joey, but I just couldn't. Drea de Matteo sucks the life out of the show.

She's as funny as Madonna in Swept Away.

14. actually, that was one of the better ones.
Wouldn't ever have been a massive hit - but solid enough.

I went with Three's a Crowd - because it looked lonely.

21. I'm sure it was fine; it's just that while they were terrific ancillary
characters, superlative even, it was silly to think that they could carry a series. It would be like giving Larry, Darryl and Darryl a series.

7. "Joey" is hideous beyond words.
The least likable, IMO, cast member of "Friends" was given a spinoff show. Should have given the show to Lisa Kudrow.

9. I voted for Mayberry RFD.
The AGS was a certifiable classic, but RFD wasn't even good. Barney Fife was long gone and the most boring character in TV history, Howard, 'filled' Barney's shoes.

Shoulda nipped that one in the bud!

13. Joey was the most "one dimensional" character
on Friends, it seems like his whole thing was the "how you doin'" and little else. Honestly I don't think a spin-off of any of the Friends characters would have worked because it was too much of an ensemble show. I agree Joey is unwatchable

10. Mama's Family
:scared:

Worst sitcom ever - qualifies since it was spun off from equally unfunny skits on the Carol Burnett show.

Well, loser, actually, but still. What a horrifying stinkburger. (Hey, is Ken Berry on all of these shows?)

15. Green Acres!
Worst: The Ropers

Speaking of AfterMASH, Harry Morgan also did a spinoff of something in the 50's but I don't remember the details.

16. There are 3 flavors of spin offs
First, the lame keep the show going ones, such as AfterMash, Archie Bunkers Place, Three's a Crowd. Those always stink.

Then there is the true spinoff, where an interesting supporting character is given a show of their own. Gomer Pyle, Good Times, The Ropers, sort of Maude (Maude was in All in the Family twice, once was a straight guest shot and the next was a variation of the third type of spin off, the cheapie pilot)

The cheapie pilot spinoff. Save money developing a new idea on an existing show. The single greatest example was The Andy Griffith Show which was done as an episode of The Danny Thomas Show. It was an intentionally created character designed to test the premise without great expense. The great Sheldon Leonard came up with that idea.

So, that in mind, All of the categry one shows tend to be horrid.

Most of the second type are bad but some weren't. The Ropers or Joanie Loves Chachi would be the worst. Frazier and Good Times, before they killed James off would be examples of better ones.

The third type is kind of rare so hard to track. In a sense, Happy Days was done that way on Love American Style. Hard to judge those very well.

20. Beverly Hills Bunz
Dennis Franz had this dynamite role in Hill Street Blues with Det. Norm Bunz. But the spinoff with him and his HSB cohort Sidney Thurston just sucked dog feces.
